OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE Wind Turbine Gearbox Exchange – short notice replacement of two gearboxes

3sun Group achieved a cost reduction of 20% for the client and had turbines working and generating ahead of schedule.

CHALLENGE – Two gearboxes had failed on a North Sea offshore windfarm during a high generation period. The operator needed the major components replaced swiftly, efficiently and safely to minimise the shutdown of their assets and maximise turbine generation.

SOLUTION – 3sun Group teamed with a jack-up vessel provider, who is a long-term partner of the group, to provide a dual solution, which incorporated the jack-up and experienced personnel.

The diverse range of abilities of 3sun personnel meant they were able to perform all aspects of the work, such as the necessary bolt torqueing, electrical connections, slinging, rigging and appointed persons controlling lifting operations.

RESULTS – 3sun provided specialist multi- disciplined teams of skilled technicians to conduct the works. The work scope was executed ahead

of schedule by efficient scheduling and effective logistics.

This reduced the costs to the client and maximised generation of the wind turbine.

This was the first gearbox replacement carried out by a company other than the turbine original equipment manufacturer (OEM.)

MAXIMISING VALUE – 3sun Group’s previous track record on the site, where 3sun Group has undertaken a range of services, the group had the opportunity to provide an alternative service to the OEM. 3sun Group and the jack-up vessel provider, worked together to provide a tailored approach to the operator, which ultimately led to a cost reduction of 20% for the client.

Both turbines were up and generating ahead of schedule.
