INDUSTRY EXPERTS — CAREERS

Nor being part of the dynamic supply chain that has worked with the operators to achieve a strike price of £57.50 in this year’s Contracts for Difference auction.

Nor would he have predicted that almost 90% of 3sun Group work would be in renewables with teams of 3sun Group staff working all over the UK and northern Europe, with teams on each of the different stages of the life cycle of Rampion windfarm.

THE BEST VIEW FROM HIS WINDOW…. One of his proudest moments was being the first business in East Anglia to secure an investment from BGF (Business Growth Fund) of £10million to help drive future years of continuous growth.

Standing equal to that was watching the turbine towers for the Galloper Offshore Wind Farm grow skywards from the windows of his home, built by a 3sun Group team working with Siemens Gamesa and watching them, one Sunday morning, sail away for installation loaded with blades on the jack-up vessel Pacific Orca.

That was a poignant moment when, after many years of talk about local jobs for offshore windfarms to be built off the east coast, the community could see it happening and dominating its skyline, like a positive beacon for the future.

INTEGRITY AND REPUTATION FEED GROWTH

On the wall of 3sun headquarters reception, a plaque from the Sunday Times International Track 200 2015 marks the company’s status as a fast- growing business. Every business has its five and 10 year plans, but 3sun Group is testament to how external circumstances really shape the future.

Founding and building a business providing engineering equipment, resources for oil & gas and then keeping pace with the escalating development of the offshore wind industry has brought its challenges.

Acquisition has been one strand behind the company’s rapid growth strategy–alongside responding to customers’ needs and exceeding expectation, working hard to build a reputation and investing in staff to keep them and maintain a leading reputation. Its first acquisition of wind services in 2010 went on to shape the business to what it is today.

KEEPING THE FAMILY FEEL The 3sun Group name was inspired by Graham’s three sons, Andrew, Kyle and Dylan. His two elder sons are now working in the business, learning skills in different areas of the business. Andrew, the eldest, is administering installation project operations, while Kyle completed the company’s pre- apprenticeship programme and is now an apprentice preparing to go offshore for the first time.

Maintaining a family feel to the business has been crucial to Graham from the outset

Maintaining a family feel to the business has been crucial to Graham from the outset. Keeping up with hundreds of people spread across the UK and northern Europe and ensuring they feel part of the business is not easy, but regular and effective communication with them is an important focus for Graham.

TRAINING IS THE FUTURE… Graham’s belief that the wind industry will need the best skilled people has driven him to make sure he will be supplying them. The company spent £1.4million in training 3sun Group staff last year to service existing contracts and prepare for next year’s record pipeline.

College feeds into apprenticeships. Its first ‘graduates started their apprenticeships in September and have completed their basic training. The second cohort are now in their final year. The apprenticeship will give young people transferrable skills across the exciting energy industry.

Graham wants to see these skills that make the UK world-leading in offshore wind exported. More than 40 countries already want to develop offshore wind. In oil & gas you could go anywhere in the world in the industry and hear a Norfolk or Suffolk accent. Graham would like to see the same for wind – wearing 3sun Group PPE.

FOREVER CHANGING WORLD… To have been part of the offshore wind industry since its start, watching it mature and keeping up with its astonishing pace, has been a privilege for Graham – and founding and building a company that has played a key role in an industry that has to be ever-smarter and looking to do things better for less.

Working with an ambitious, dynamic and flexible team and leading operators has been the icing on the cake. Graham is also driven by the fact that two days are never the same in an industry developing with such speed. But what is unique about working in offshore wind is the industry’s hunger to embrace innovation, Graham says, whether it’s engineering, equipment, new processes or the way business is done and the industry thinks.

The open minds and shared goal – to bring down costs to build maximum capacity to bring down energy costs for the consumer in a safe & environmentally friendly manner– makes every day in the fast-paced industry an exciting one.
