BEATRICE – THE STORY SO FAR
FEATURE SPONSOR
REALISING PROJECT PLANNING SYNERGY
When reflecting on the extensive requirements for engineering and project management going into any offshore installation of wind turbine generators, it is insightful to evaluate Swire Blue Ocean’s (SBO) preparations for the Beatrice Offshore Windfarm in light of the comparable role on the preceding Galloper Offshore Windfarm project.
To the operational benefit of all involved, Siemens Gamesa has realised project planning synergy through contracting SBO for both projects, thereby unlocking a considerable potential for mutually beneficial collaboration, whilst ensuring redundancy through having two interchangeable sister vessels capable of performing the works.
ADAPTABILITY
This decision was since followed up by Siemens Gamesa’s commissioning of turbine sea-fastening designed to cope with the most demanding components and environmental factors, whilst also being designed for a useful life well beyond the completion of Beatrice. The
sea-fastening is also adaptable, with the inbuilt capability to accommodate further incremental changes to component dimensions and is equally suitable for both O class sister vessels, enabling multi-project functionality.
Being able to completely re-use a set of sea-fastening ensures that the deck layout will be near-identical from project- to-project. Personnel involved in lifting and component handling will therefore experience a great deal of familiarity when re-using the equipment. While lift plans need to be adapted to fit project- specific factors, the highest possible degree of standardisation is being sought, driving a gradual industrialisation of installation operations to an extent rarely found in a typically project- focused industry.
NUMEROUS BENEFITS The benefits to such standardisation are numerous. Robust routines and extensively verified operations should mitigate risks to health and safety and it should also be possible to achieve
savings to the
installation durations, while also utilising shorter weather
windows. As confidence
and familiarity with the operation materialised on Galloper, gradual increases to permissible wind speeds have already been achieved.
This learning will be useful on a highly exposed site such as Beatrice, and should hopefully reduce the total project duration. Moreover, maintaining continuity of nominated key personnel from both the onshore support organisations on the two projects, both from SBO and Siemens Gamesa, will lay the foundations for a safe, swift and successful completion of turbine installation on Beatrice.
