THE BENEFITS OF TRAINING – WISE WORDS INDEED
Training not only brings benefits to the individual but ultimately to the company too
Henry Ford once said – “The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay.”
Whether you are building some of the world’s biggest turbine blades or surveying them as they are loaded, discharged or handled ashore the benefits of keeping your staff ‘current’ are self-evident. Too often over my 35- year career in surveying I have heard company owners tell me that they haven’t got the time, effort, money or desire to carry out additional training for staff. Training and development was one of the lowest things on their priority list. Unfortunately, those companies no longer exist. In business, strength doesn’t just come from what you can do, it comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.
RELEVANCE This is relevant in every walk of business life, but it couldn’t be more relevant than in the wind energy
industry where the landscape has been evolving rapidly over the past few years. However, it is necessary to ensure that the right type of training is undertaken. When choosing what training path to take it is important to know what your client needs.
We were recently invited (along with surveyors from all over the world) to attend at a turbine manufacturer’s offices in Denmark. The purpose of the visit was to highlight exactly what the client wants from their suppliers. This has helped to shape training strategy be that in regard to welding inspections or greater awareness of health and safety.
TRANSFORMATION After 130 years in business our
involvement in the wind energy industry has really shaken us up and has made us much more training aware. We have transformed into a company that encourages a culture of continual development amongst its staff. This enables employees to develop necessary skillsets and allows management to focus on more ‘management’ related processes. The outcome? Increased productivity and profitability.
Remember, he who knows nothing but thinks that he knows everything is probably destined for a career in politics.
