CABLE CONNECTIONS & JOINTING

FEATURE SPONSOR

STANDARD AND CUSTOM CABLE GRIP MANUFACTURER

Based in Norfolk, less than half an hour away from the coastline that holds much of the UK’s offshore activity is Albion Manufacturing, a manufacturer of standard and custom cable pulling/handling grips (also known in the industry as Chinese fingers)

PROJECT INVOLVEMENT

Chinese fingers are an essential piece of array, export or turbine hang off for installation projects and it is rare that the requirements for any one project are the same as any other. Albion are often involved with the cable manufacturers and installers from early in the project planning stages and their clients’ reliance on their products has led to some requesting long- terms agreement for supply. The company are constantly looking at design improvements through their R & D activities and are currently in discussions with clients with regarding designs for systems that provide simpler and smoother installations of cables through J-tube configurations.

Although originally established in the 1850’s as wire workers and steel fabricators, cable grip production has been a going concern for over 60 years. Initially manufacture was largely for the telecom, overhead line and mining industries; however with the growth of the offshore wind industry Albion has seen a large demand not only for their high load bespoke items, used predominantly in the installations of array and export cabling projects, but also for their smaller but high volume non-standard grips used on cables installed within the turbine towers.

TYPES OF CABLE GRIPS INCLUDE…

• Single Eye which can only be placed on the end of the cable for high pulling strength

• Double Eye which allows the cable to pass through the grip between the eyes allowing the load to be taken off the free end of the cable when securing to a termination

• Fleeting Eye, a single offset eye that, unlike the standard Single Eye, allows the cable to pass through the grip

• Split Lace up, for attachment at any point on the cable

• Open Ended, no eyes for a fast non positive connection of two cables, wires or ropes

DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING

The company undertake all their own manufacture for which they offer a design, development and test service. Products can be manufacturered in Galvanised, Stainless Steel and Non-Conductive materials to suit specific conditions for use on cables from 4.0mm dia upwards, (the largest manufactured to date was for an 1100mm dia cable) with loads of 200TE MBL and higher.

CERTIFICATION

Albion are committed to offering the best quality products and service which is demonstrated by their ISO 9001 certification by a UKAS accredited certification body. In addition they are proud to boast that their products have been tested and their Quality Assurance Systems audited successfully by a number of major companies within the oil & gas and offshore wind industry. Possibly their best testimonial is that they can name companies such as Prysmian, ABB/NKT, JDR Cables, VBMS, Jan De Nul, Global Marine and more as regular clients.

TAILOR MADE SOLUTIONS

Tom Nix, Director explained: “Installation requirements vary from project to project. Clients will often be restricted by limited working spaces or may have highly specific requirements placed on them. This is where we are able to draw on our expertise and design to tailor make products that will fit within confined spaces.

“Our knowledge and ability to provide solutions has allowed us to forge strong relationships with many large, international companies and we continue to attract new customers. “We are committed to keeping quality at the forefront of our business operation and development plan. Investing in our company and our staff is an essential part of growing our business and attracting and retaining a dedicated and skilled workforce.”
