UXO DETECTION AT BORKUM RIFFGRUND 2


Borkum Riffgrund is an offshore windfarm in the German Exclusive Economic Zone of the North Sea. It consists of the two sub-areas, Borkum Riffgrund 1 and Borkum Riffgrund 2.


Borkum Riffgrund 2, with 56 wind turbines planned, is scheduled to be completed in 2019. The Danish energy company DONG Energy acquired the rights to the project in 2009. The windpark is located about 38 kilometres north of the island of Borkum and covers an area of over 35km².


PROJECT DETAIL


The geophysical survey performed by MMT in summer 2016 yielded a total of 444 targets. During spring 2017 the company conducted the UXO survey works, ROV inspection and Explosive Ordnance Disposal services. These services were required along the Inter-array cables, the interlink cables connecting the two areas of the the windfarm sites and on the planned locations for the Wind Turbine Generators and offshore substations at the planned Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore windfarm site.


The UXO inspection and disposal phase started with a mobilisation of the survey equipment onboard the DP2 vessel Edda Fonn.


A NEW SURVEY SOLUTION


Most of the targets were buried and in order to speed up the time consuming excavations 2 ROVs were used simultaneously. This proved to be very effective and saved a significant amount of time. Both ROVs were mobilised on Edda Fonn with gradiometer systems and dredge pumps for verification and excavation of targets.


A UXO survey of four sections of dead cables was required before the cables were cut for later removal. Inspections of proposed interarray cable locations, interconnector cable locations and anchor chain sweep areas was also undertaken. Of the original 444 targets, 249 targets were identified for inspection


during the survey works. Of the inspected targets three targets required detonation disposal.
