Amble Health & Leisure Club Surf’s up
My favourite activity by far this year was surfing where we saw so many of you getting involved in the local area… even in May when the temperature was only 8 degrees! The skill level demonstrated by some of the young people amazed everyone… including the instructors and those watching from the beach all wrapped up. As mentioned this summer we have some
more great activities planned including more surfing! Please send your photos into the magazine of you getting involved so I can keep up to date with what is happening at Amble Leisure whilst on my next venture with Park Leisure. If your family is booked onto our surfing
activities this summer, here’s some great advice for you, or if you’re thinking about trying it for yourself, take a look below at why surfing is a must-do!
Getting started
Like any sport you’ve not done a lot of, it can take time, patience and confidence until you get the hang of it. However with the dedicated and expert teams on hand, the basic skills you need can be picked up in a very short amount of time. With advice on everything from the type of board, to the clothing, to the rules of the sea, you’ll feel much more knowledgeable in no time.
Benefits of surfing
• There are many health benefits of surfing including cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength from paddling, and leg and core strength, if you manage to stand up on the board.
• Surfing is a great way to spend time outdoors in our beautiful local area and a great chance to enjoy the natural
How to keep safe
If you book onto the activities the expert team of instructors will be there every step of the way. However, if you fancy going on your own, please be mindful of your safety.
• Make sure you are not alone, check the beach
• Look for any restrictions on the beach and follow them
• If you are a beginner, stick to beach breaks with a sandy beach
• Wear a leg rope tied to your surfboard if you are a beginner
• Ensure the leg rope is in good condition Summary
• Surfing has benefits for your health and overall wellbeing
• You need to take care in the water at all times
• Ensure you are fully prepared before entering the water
…and most importantly, have a load of fun! • Wear sunscreen, even on cloudy days
• Everyone has a different tolerance for cold water so wear what is comfortable for you. If you would like some protection from the cold, wear a wetsuit
• Watch the area and other people before you enter and find the best place to paddle out
• Warm up before entering the water
environment. With everything from sea-life below and beautiful birds flying above, there’s no better place than the coast to get close to nature.
• You’ll get the chance to meet other like- minded owners and have fun with your family.
Stop making excuses! Here’s why you should start a healthier way of living today!
Now that summer is nearly here, everybody wants to look their best and here at the Leisure Centre we are keen to help you achieve results. We often hear so many excuses and reasons not to exercise. Here are the most common reasons:
1. ‘’Exercise is boring” Studies
have shown that
exercising with a friend and listening to music is more fun and can help bring results quicker.
2. “Life gets in the way, I do not have time”
Experts have found that short bursts of intense training can be as good as longer sessions. A Canadian study has proved 1 minute of sprint training can be as effective and give the same health benefits as a traditional workout.
3. “I’m too tired”
Taking some exercise will leave you more energised. It increases levels of feel-good endorphins and boosts circulation. The University of Georgia found people were less lethargic if they exercised three times weekly at a moderate or low intensity.
We would be delighted to speak with you and devise a tailor made exercise plan for you at Amble Leisure. You may be guilty of the above excuses but we want to help you change this. Did you know the 4th most common excuse is; “Gyms are expensive” however we are free to owners, therefore another reason why now is a great time to start.
