Cornwall - Wild Swimming

Trevaunance Cove St Agnes

Wedged between craggy headlands that bear the dramatic scars of Cornwall’s epic mining history, Trevaunance cove attracts a melting pot of surf dudes and wild swimmers. When the waves abate it’s the swimmers that reign, making the most of the excellent water quality as they paddle out around Gull Rock. Even in the thick of winter a huge crowd of locals brave an icy Christmas day dip, before huddling into the cosy local pub, The Driftwood Spars, for a pint of ale from its microbrewery.

Treyarnon Tidal Pool Treyarnon

As the tide ebbs, this natural pool carved into mussel-clad rocks beside Treyarnon beach, is the perfect place to take a dip without having to battle the surf. It’s big enough for more serious swimmers to do a few laps, whilst also making a picturesque swimming hole for the whole family. On sunny days flop-out on the rocks like seals to warm up before a picnic on the turf-topped cliffs, or on colder days retreat to the Treyarnon YHA café for a heart-warming bowl of soup.

Porthtowan Tidal Pool, Porthtowan

You don’t have to be a serious swimmer to get your ocean therapy in Porthtowan’s tidal pool, nestled at the foot of the cliffs on the north- eastern edge of the beach. Take a dip on the flooding tide to experience the ocean crashing against the wall of this secluded swimming hole, then warm up in the legendary beachside Blue Bar. If you want to avoid a steep cliff descent to reach the water, it’s possible to access the pool from the beach at low tide.

Wild swimming tips:

1 Train in the swimming pool to get to a competent level before taking the plunge in open water.

2 Join a wild swimming group or swim with friends.

3 Invest in a wetsuit if you’re going to be spending a long time in the water – the biggest danger of swimming in UK waters is getting hypothermia.

4 Don’t leap into the water from the rocks unless you are absolutely sure that the water is deep enough.
