SMALL WIND SECTOR

PLANNING FOR SUCCESS

North Energy Associates Ltd has a long track record in the wind industry. Started in the early days of the UK wind industry in 1991 in Morpeth, Northumberland, the company initially worked on site-finding for developers and several of these sites have now become wind farms, such as Kiln Pit Hill and Middlemoor.

FIRST PLANNING CONSENT the team applied for and obtained the first planning consent in the North East for an inland wind farm, at Tow Law in County Durham. After undertaking considerable public engagement activity, the application went through planning committee without a single dissenting voice! Many years later this area is now a wind farm hotspot.

NORTH ENERGY

North Energy has become a well respected independent consultant in the field with work around the UK in addition to the North East. The iconic Glyndebourne wind turbine, (illustrated, courtesy of Mark Bridges) on an outlier of the South Downs in East Sussex, was a project which North Energy was involved with from its inception. After assessing the estate and selecting the site, followed by extensive environmental impact assessment work, public consultation and the planning submission, North Energy took the project all the way through public enquiry until consent from the Secretary of State was achieved!

SPECIALISM

North Energy’s particular specialism is the combination of technical wind expertise and wind planning and the teams also masterminded the site design, EIA and planning application submissions for two large wind farms in the Selby area which are still in process. Currently they are in demand for site assessment, optimising siting and impact assessment/planning for single turbine Feed-in Tariff wind developments.

Two planning applications and one appeal are in process, for sites in the region and several projects in the pre-submission stage in County Durham, Lincolnshire and Angus.

As well as large projects, North Energy has always had an interest in the small wind sector, and has helped a number of off-grid projects in Northumberland and County Durham to generate power onsite, from renewables, including the installation of 2.5kW and 6kW wind turbines in some of the most remote areas of England.

The Cassop School 50kW wind turbine was one of North Energy’s early projects. In 1990/2000 the company developed the Gazelle wind turbine, a 20kW grid connected turbine, 24 of which are installed around the country.

EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE North Energy’s skills pool for the wind industry includes extensive experience of planning and EIA, production of photomontages, noise, shadow flicker, heritage and residential amenity assessments and planning statements.
