WIND ENERGY INDUSTRY SKILLS GAP INITIATIVE UPDATE
HISTORY
In the April/May 2012 edition we featured the ‘Kent Schools Wind Energy Enterprise Challenge’ which started our initiative on addressing the wind energy industry skills gap as a matter of urgency.
I year ago we reported that we see there are 4 main areas to focus on if we are to satisfy that need and would include a focused approach in the following areas...
• Schools – student engagement and awareness at the early stages of career development (ages 14 onwards)
• Schools’ 6th Form /further education – schools/colleges
• Engineering and science graduate attraction – universities
• Mature experienced individuals from other relevant energy industries/sources e.g. oil & gas industry/forces etc
A major feature in the June/July 2013 highlighted each of these areas as a prelude to a series focusing more in detail in each of the following editions.
Editorial evolved over those editions and featured all sorts of contributions from many areas of the UK and also drew lots of interest from Europe and beyond.
The time has now come to review the situation having gathered all the information and response from the industry.
WIND INDUSTRY CAREERS WEBSITE preparations are in hand to launch the new Wind Industry Careers website. We delayed this launch until the industry understood what we are trying to achieve in the best interests of the industry as a whole.
This interactive and informative website be used to attract people of all ages and abilities into the wind energy industry.
There are a number of initiatives to help the industry progress in the skills area and it is our policy to compliment these initiatives and not to be in competition with anyone.
WIND INDUSTRY CAREERS STEERING GROUP
With this in mind we created the Wind Industry Careers steering group to guide us through the set up and monitor the progress of the initiative.
the group met in late 2012 to set policy and procedures – the first meeting was extremely successful and the second meeting is scheduled in 2013 followed by the launch of the new website.
WIND INDUSTRY CAREERS ‘ROAD- SHOWS’
It remains our intention to tour the UK and organise road-shows at appropriate venues suited to the 4 target areas i.e. selected schools, colleges, universities and company sites/forces bases – all decision makers from the relevant areas of the industry, some of which have already been approached for their comments, were enthusiastic about getting involved with this initiative. Following further consultation with interested parties timescales and road-show formats can be discussed and decided.
We will keep you informed of developments.
REGULAR SKILLS GAP FEATURE The Skills Gap initiative has attracted many editorial contributions from educational establishments who are carrying out sterling work in their own areas of expertise.
We will therefore continue to host a regular skills gap feature within each edition of the magazine – please feel free to contribute regular editorial for inclusion.
