MODUS: TWO SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS

Specialist subsea contractor, Modus Seabed Intervention has delivered two significant projects for Van Oord on the high profile EDF Energy Renewables Teesside Offshore Wind Farm.

In addition to providing inter-array cable trenching and survey services, Modus delivered new equipment to bury the export cables that will carry the power generated by the array to the shore.

SPECIALIST MODIFICATION to facilitate the burial of the two 1.2km export power cables, the Darlington-based company invested in a shore approach

and shallow water towed jetting spread, which was specially-modified by Modus’ engineers to meet the requirements of offshore wind farm construction.

The trencher, designated JS1, was originally designed to bury fibre optic cables up to 3m below seabed level in water depths of up to 18 metres. Modus’ engineers modified the unit to enable it to bury heavier and more rigid power cables with a diameter of around 200mm.

LOCAL SUPPLY CHAIN SUPPORT With the support of its North East England-based supply chain, Modus also

increased the instrumentation of JS1 and designed a new control system, to ensure the operation was less labour intensive, and added a number of features to further enable it to meet the requirements of renewables projects such as sonar and underwater cameras.

DELIVERING IMPORTANT PROJECTS Jake Tompkins, Managing Director of Modus Seabed Intervention, said: “We were very proud to deliver these two important projects for Van Oord and EDF.

“As well as being a strong endorsement of our position in the offshore wind supply chain, delivering these contracts continues to demonstrate our ability to innovate and develop technology-led solutions, which support the cost-effective construction of offshore wind farms.”

EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE Jake added: “By applying our technology development experience and expertise, we have expanded our trenching services through the introduction of the JS1 trenching spread.

“Modus is now able to deliver shallow water cable trenching from offshore wind farms to the beach to complement the capability of our existing fleet of trenching systems.”

INNOVATIVE ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS

ACEDA, a leading provider of integrated engineering solutions, based in Stokesley, Teesside, are working closely with key organisations within the offshore wind sector to design and deliver turnkey IP integrated services using leading edge fibre optic technologies.

CORE INFRASTRUCTURE

Fibre optic cables form part of the export and array cables between substations and offshore wind turbines. this core fibre optic backbone provides a platform for Ip connectivity for SCADA communications whilst providing future scalability for additional Ip edge device utilisation. ACEDA provide connectivity for a number of edge devices that are controlled, monitored and maintained through a single Ip management platform.
