ALL IN A DAYS WORK INNOVATIVE SOLUTION

At home, asleep and in the middle of the night, Jeff sat up bolt upright and asked his wife “how much is butter?” His wife, somewhat bemused from her slumber responded.

Jeff had had an epiphany moment. This was his solution to the leaking dock gates which had been giving him a problem! boxes and boxes of Lurpak butter (salted) were bought and used to seal the gates. Eureka! It worked allowing the repair to take place in the dry. A week later, on dive inspection there was found to be a natural marvel – thousands of crabs had congregated to the gates and were feasting on the gastronomy – just goes to show what a superior butter it was!

In the past when operating his salvage business he was called upon to salvage shipwrecks, whereupon insurance companies would contact him. Alas no gold bullion was recovered!

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE – NO TWO DAYS ARE THE SAME Variety certainly keeps the momentum going and there is no such thing as a typical day. Jeff is called upon to undertake inspections on a regular basis and he is a regular at the port of tyne advising on fabrication projects – he can be fitting fenders on the dock sides or be negotiating with clients.

Ingenious by design and yet so simple, it consists of standard 10m x 4m pontoons, interconnected, and when assembled can carry loads of up to 100 tonnes over water utilising an interlocking pushing tug also 10 x 4; it is extremely manoeuvrable and very versatile.

THE FUTURE

Jeff’s ambition is to grow the business – he is not yet ready to retire, to build a new deep water berth and to establish new premises and continue...

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 3 WORDS Modestly, he declined to remark, whereupon his wife came to his rescue and stated; kindness; integrity and a ‘can do’ attitude

In short Jeff’s ingenuity and enthusiasm is infectious, his attitude is inspiring and his ambition is boundless. It was a joy to have just had a snippet of this enthusiasm in our brief interview.

INNOVATIVE PROWESS

Another example of his innovative prowess is the design of a modular pontoon which he uses within the wind industry. This allows the huge turbines to be transported via water and not road, which has been used for transporting massive structures – Technip have recently utilised this to transport one of their new SMD Trenchers.
