LEADING THE WAY FOR BOLTING SERVICE TO THE RENEWABLE SECTOR
In the constantly changing landscape of the wind power industry, turbine design is being taken to new levels in order to maximise efficiency. Larger parts with tighter tolerances are being used, higher quality materials are demanded, reliability is essential, and cost-efficiency is a must.
WIND TURBINE ASSEMBLY HYTORC has been involved in turbine assembly since the early days of the industry, and has invested heavily to stay ahead of the curve on its progression. This can only be achieved by implementing the new techniques and products from the company that make wind turbine manufacturing and maintenance simpler, faster and more cost effective.
EXPERIENCE
With over forty years of experience in industrial bolting technology, HYTORC is the world’s oldest and largest manufacturer of hydraulic and pneumatic torque wrenches. They are dedicated to providing the highest level of customer service by continually developing new products to make bolting jobs as safe and hassle-free as possible. More and more specially designed tools are used daily in the wind industry than all other brands combined. the products are CE, tUV & ISo 9001:2000 approved and the company understand that the renewable sector is different in attitude to other power generation sectors and have responded with a unique approach to supplying customers.
LOCAL SUPPORT AND SERVICE With its local presence in the North East,
Aberdeen and Ireland the company has worked hard to build a wind energy network to provide fast service and quick turnarounds in every area of the British Isles. the new UK head office is located in Cramlington. The new premises have been designed with the expansion of the renewable industry in mind, with over 10,000 sq. ft. of space to
ENGINEERING A SOLUTION Although most torque tool manufacturers rely on existing technology, in-house has a designated CAD-design centre which is available to provide 3D drawings of products and/or customised solutions. These drawings can be integrated into the turbine design/manufacturing process to allow manufacturers to reduce design time and minimise unknowns during the assembly process.

DEDICATION
While most torque tool manufacturers merely supply tooling through their normal distribution network, the company discovered a need for reliable equipment and, more importantly, dedicated, knowledgeable wind energy representatives. In the early stages of the renewable industry the company responded by hiring specialists that had worked in the wind power industry and were familiar with the many different manufacturers of wind turbines. the next step was identifying the different obstacles that each manufacturer was facing during turbine assembly and/or maintenance and working together with their highly experienced engineering staff to provide a solution.
In the last five years alone, kits have been developed for nearly every application on the various turbines offered by every manufacturer in the industry. With specialist engineers available for free on- site supervision and training in nearly every country in the world, the company has offshore trained personnel to assist with the development of easier systems and methods of bolting and are constantly looking to build on their reputation for reliability in the industry.
With an emphasis on safety, trained wind power specialists will facilitate communication between the turbine manufacturer and the HYTORC design centre to optimise production processes and to help alleviate assembly line bottlenecks. In one example, a custom fixture was designed to reduce assembly time for the shrink disc application.
This application had previously taken up to nine hours, which slowed the manufacturing process for the entire turbine. HYTORC delivered a custom designed solution which reduced manufacturing time for the shrink disc to just one hour.
As the inventor of the first hydraulic wrench, the company has been behind nearly every innovation in the bolting tool industry. Their latest tooling includes the most innovative developments to improve safety and liability with the benefit of accurate bolt loads within 2%. this is achieved using the patented ‘hands free bolting’ technology. Within the range of bolting solutions we have special wind tooling which can be operated hands-free, giving maximum safety to the operator.
