monplace use of air gaging,” explained Powell. These include parts with long IDs, where air gaging is the only practical solution, especially when measuring tolerances as tight as 1.2 µm (50 µin.). Marposs provides gaging solutions that are both highly automated, highly manual, and mixtures of the two. While air gaging is a little more diffi cult to automate than electronic contact gaging, again, it is often the only practical solution. “The common practice is to put the gage in a load station and put the part on a very dedicated loading mechanism to the gage, or you elevate the gage into the part,” said Powell. At the same time, he offers a total perspective, including advantages and cautions. “The upfront cost is indeed less than many other solutions. That is because the gage is a relatively simple device to make—a piece of steel with some holes drilled through it [to make air spindles and gages],” he explained. Add to that an air-to-electric transducer and a relatively inexpensive PC completes the system. How- ever, he went on to note, that a long-term disadvantage is the cost of the pressurized air. “Air is expensive because it needs a compressor, fi lters and driers to produce it,” he said. “Even machine tools are using more electronics, reducing or eliminating hydraulic or pneumatic actuators.” There is also the cost of obtaining and maintaining the multiple masters required for pneumatic gages, especially for ISO-compliant organizations. “We are constantly monitoring our market and more
