A new version of Cool-Grind’s reconfi gurable nozzles uses internal valves to isolate any nozzle tip without having to remove it and plug the hole. The inboard nozzle is always on and an individual outer nozzle can be closed simply by pushing in a plunger. Each nozzle can also be swiveled and locked into its aiming position with a small thumbscrew. That’s very useful for quick optimization for short-run jobs.

For example, when Webster fi rst met with Barnes Aerospace (Windsor, CT), their continuously dressed creep feed (CDCF) grinders used dedicated nozzles for each of the forms being ground. Operators had to change nozzles every time a job changed and the gear was easily damaged when put into storage. Plus there was little standardization of the exit apertures and jet aim.
Cool-Grind delivered a system that stabilizes the fl ow in a manifold and then delivers the coolant via multiple nozzles to cover a wheel up to four inches wide. Each of the nozzles includes a lockable ±20° swivel joint that gives the operator

matrix spacing over a 25 × 75-mm exit area envelope. The matrix of holes in the endplate allows either a tube or plug to be inserted to confi gure the fl ow to the wheel profi le. In practice each round jet disperses slightly to create a blended jet that matches the wheel profi le. Set up typically takes less than fi ve minutes.
