celebrating boeing The Boeing Company Celebrates its 100th Year in 2016

Over the course of 100 years, Boeing has gone from handcrafting small wings of wood and canvas for biplanes to producing the high-tech carbon–fi ber composite wings used for the 787 Dreamliner.

A Century Old and Going Strong T

he business of designing, test- ing, building and supporting aircraft is a team sport. In the

aerospace business today, it truly takes a village—a global village with incred- ible knowledge, skill and technology. But that wasn’t always the case. One hun-

dred years ago, in July 1916, it really just took a man, William Boeing, a friend and a dream. After William Boeing and his friend, Navy engineer Conrad Westervelt, fl ew a biplane over Lake Washington, Boeing became convinced they could build a better plane. William Boeing, who studied at Yale, be- came wealthy in the timber business, where he had learned about wooden structures.

So, build a better plane they did, laying the foundation in Seattle for one of the most successful and powerful aero- space manufacturing companies in world history. Today, Boeing is the world’s largest aerospace company. Nearly 160,000 people are employed by The Boeing

Company, now headquartered in Chicago. While about 80% of them are employed in the United States, the company has

offi ces and factories in more than 60 countries around the world to create, build and support its commercial jetliners, as well as defense, space and security systems.

With its vast manufacturing supply chain, Boe- ing touches the lives of many more companies and manufacturing professionals in the US and beyond. To recognize Boeing’s Centennial, we—the team at SME—worked with Boeing to bring you a special photo spread that celebrates the compa-

ny’s launch in late 2015 of the 737 MAX, the newest member of Boeing’s jetliner family.

The way we build planes today has changed dramati- cally over the past 100 years. The wood-and-canvas wings of years past have given way to wings made of high-tech carbon–fi ber composites, shown above in the 787. In the pages ahead, we honor Boeing’s special anniversary and encourage you to visit Boeing’s special centennial website (http://www.boeing.com/boeing100/) where you’ll fi nd more photographs, information and other resources to refl ect on and celebrate these changing times in manufacturing.
