SOFTWARE UPDATE Oracle Corp. (Redwood Shores, CA) announced it entered

into a defi nitive agreement to buy cloud-based ERP and supply chain software developer NetSuite (San Mateo, CA) in a deal valued at $109 per share in cash, or approximately $9.3 billion. Cloud applications from Oracle and NetSuite were said to be complementary and will coexist in the marketplace, accord- ing to Oracle CEO Mark Hurd. “We intend to invest heavily in both products—engineering and distribution,” Hurd said. The transaction is expected to close in 2016, subject to closing conditions, including NetSuite stockholders tendering a majority of NetSuite’s outstanding shares in the tender offer.

New Releases

Autodesk Inc. (San Rafael, CA) has released the 2017 updates of its Delcam CAM software line, including Power- Mill, FeatureCAM, and Partmaker, which are now part of the Autodesk Manufacturing Portfolio. Autodesk also released new versions of the PowerInspect inspection software and PowerShape design package it also acquired when the company bought CAM software specialist Delcam plc (Birmingham, UK) in February 2014 for about $286 million.

The Autodesk 2017 portfolio includes enhanced ver- sions of FeatureCAM for automating CNC programming; PartMaker for precision part manufacturing with Swiss-type lathes; PowerMill for designing the most complex molds, dies and other components; PowerShape for the design of 3D complex parts; and PowerInspect hardware-indepen- dent inspection software.

“Manufacturers need to iterate and innovate faster than

ever before to stay competitive as the marketplace is redefi ned by a new future of making things,” said Mark Forth, manager of manufacturing industry strategy at Autodesk. “Autodesk’s new 2017 CAM products are designed to help our customers learn, improve and master advanced manufacturing tech- niques that ultimately lead to better designed and functional products being brought to market more quickly and effi ciently.” FeatureCAM 2017 is an easy-to-use solution for milling machines, turning and turn/mill centers, and wire EDM. Auto- mation tools in FeatureCAM help manufacturers reduce pro- gramming time, allowing parts to be made faster. PartMaker 2017, which enables complex, high-precision part manu- facturing with Swiss-type lathes, is now available within the FeatureCAM 2017 Ultimate product tier. The two products form a complementary bundle that addresses the program- ming requirements of today’s manufacturing shops. Autodesk PowerMill 2017 offers the ability to easily and

effectively manufacture the most complex molds, dies and other components. The latest PowerMill features more effi - cient 3D offset fi nishing toolpaths, greater simulation controls and constraint-based logic to optimize noncutting link moves for safer, more effi cient machining, and, also for the fi rst time, PowerMill also provides strategies to create turning routines for use on fi ve-axis mill-turn machines. Vero Software (Cheltenham, UK), a unit of Hexagon AB (Stockholm, Sweden), has released its latest Edgecam 2016 R2 software, a new 64-bit version with improved speed and a host of other features. Its 64-bit computing increases ac- cess to memory, improving overall effi ciency, especially when working with large fi les. The program is now able to load solid models up to 20 times faster than the previous version. Among its time-saving capabilities

The Autodesk PowerMill 2017 software adds fi ve-axis turning capabilities to the precision machining package.

is the Waveform roughing strategy, a high-speed machining cycle for milling and turning that delivers consistent tool- engagement with the material, thereby maintaining constant tool-cutting load. Generating smooth toolpaths to avoid sharp changes in direction, Edgecam Waveform maintains machine-tool ve- locity while decreasing cycle time.
