NEW BEDFORD AND NEWPORT You’ll learn more about the history of the whaling industry, so integral to New England’s coastal roots, on a guided visit to the New Bedford Whaling Museum; exhibits include intricate scrimshaw carvings. Next on your course is the yachting capital of the world, Newport, Rhode Island; enjoy some free time following lunch. Newport is home to opulent summer “retreats” built during the Gilded Age (1878-1889) by businessmen with names like Astor and Vanderbilt; their vast fortunes were realised during this period of booming industry. View their imposing estates and take in the stunning seaside beauty as you journey on the celebrated Ten-Mile Drive to Newport for a two-night stay.
