3. A JEWEL OF A MISSION / LOS ANGELES Heading north towards Los Angeles, visit Mission San Juan Capistrano, known as the “jewel of the missions,” founded in 1776. A guided tour upon arrival in “LA” offers an overview of this diverse metropolis, including celebrity-studded Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and the historic TCL Chinese Theatre, where stars’ autographs, handprints, footprints, and even Jimmy Durante’s nose are immortalised in concrete. 4. THE GETTY MUSEUM / SANTA BARBARA The Getty Museum, designed by the renowned architect Richard Meier, brings together the disparate elements of the Los Angeles landscape: ocean, mountains, and urban street grid. You’ll see how together they inspired this modernist complex of curvilinear design and natural gardens. On a self-guided tour, take in traditional paintings, drawings, sculpture, and photography. Then it’s on to Santa Barbara, to enjoy a beachside tradition of eclectic arts and crafts shows produced by local artists. Stroll under the palms and along picturesque Stearns Wharf, where pelicans put on a show of their own, before checking into your resort. Dinner is at your choice of resort restaurants. Meals BD

5. SANTA BARBARA ON THE AMERICAN RIVIERA As you tour the city, get a feel for this quiet beach community that’s long been a celebrity hideaway, with a stop at the Courthouse, built in 1929. Inside you’ll find a Mural Room, masterfully painted by a largely self-taught artist whose illustrations appeared in novels by Joseph Conrad and Jack London. Next, a visit to the graceful Mission Santa Barbara introduces this city icon – a Franciscan parish still active after 225 years. After lunch downtown, you’ll have time to take advantage of your lovely oceanfront resort. Meals BL

6. WINE COUNTRY AND SCENIC HIGHWAY 101 Get ready for scenic delights as you pass through rolling hills on this morning’s road trip along coastal Highway 101.
