3. WAIKIKI / OUTRIGGER RIDE It’s off to the windward side of Oahu this morning for a scenic tour of its beaches, bays and birds. Sights include the famous Halona Blow Hole, formed by molten lava tubes that shoot powerful water sprays up to 30 feet high in the air, and the Halona Beach Cove, immortalised in a romantic scene in the movie From Here to Eternity. At Waikiki Beach, you’ll meet an authentic “beach boy,” who shares stories of the islands’ ancient surfing culture – revitalised by a small band of skilled devotees at the turn of the century. Then hop aboard a traditional outrigger canoe*, to catch the waves for an exhilarating ride, Hawaiian-style. Meals B

4. KAUAI – CLIFFS, FALLS & SPOUTS Lush mountains encircled by long, sandy beaches and sheer cliffs await on Hawaii’s oldest island – introduced to the world by the British explorer Captain Cook in 1778 as the “Sandwich Islands.” You’ll head first to Kauai’s eastern coast, with a stop at Opaekaa Falls, plunging hundreds of feet down to a pool below. Stop for lunch on half-moon Hanalei Bay, sitting at the base of cliffs reflected in the clear waters of the bay. En route to your beachfront resort, you’ll pass through the “Tunnel of Trees,” a mile-plus stretch of eucalyptus trees planted by a wealthy rancher over 150 years ago. Stop to view Spouting Horn, whose towering spurts of water are accompanied by an eerie hissing sound; ancient Hawaiians believed this was the roar of Kaikapu, a trapped lizard goddess. Spend the evening enjoying your resort’s outstanding amenities. Meals BL

5. GARDEN ISLE PLEASURES Get a bird’s-eye view of Kauai’s spectacular landscapes on an optional helicopter* adventure; you’ll soar over razor-thin cliffs, rushing waterfalls and canyons (available at additional cost; see details on page 129) or spend the entire day enjoying the wonders of the “Garden Isle” as you please. Before dinner, meet for an informative lecture that offers an in-depth introduction to the ecological challenges of Pacific Ocean islands, then enjoy dinner at your leisure. Meals BD

6. MAUI’S ICONIC IAO VALLEY Fly to the nearby island of Maui this morning for a three-night stay. Maui wears her most distinctive landmark, the majestic, dormant Mount Haleakala, as a crown; the landscapes below are cloaked with legends and lore. You’ll drive through the Iao Valley, once a sacred burial site for Hawaiian royalty and forbidden to commoners. See the iconic Iao Needle, 1,200 feet high. Sugar cane fields en route are reminders of an industry that once reigned on the island; sugar remains Hawaii’s largest agricultural crop. You’ll stop for lunch in the historic town of Lahaina, a raucous whaling port in the 1800s where sailors and missionaries often battled in the streets, now a picturesque enclave of art galleries, bars, shops and restaurants. Continue on to your luxury resort on the Wailea Coast – once an exclusive retreat for Hawaiian royalty; your resort is set on 22 acres of lush gardens overlooking the white sands of Polo Beach, with swimming pools, restaurants, and an award-winning spa. The rest of the day is yours; dine at your leisure this evening at the resort. Meals BD
