HAWAII & ALASKA
as Kalahuipua’a, the birthplace of King Kamehameha I; the fabled site is criss-crossed by early Hawaiian footpaths, royal fishponds and lava formations. Meals BLD

Join us late afternoon for a private catamaran* sail along the Kohala Coast. Meals B
11. HAWAII’S HISTORIC KONA In the years prior to Captain Cook’s 1778 arrival, the isolated Hawaiian Archipelago developed its own highly stratified society of ali`i (chiefs), kahuna (professionals) and maka`ainana (commoners). A strictly enforced social code kept many practices, like men and women eating together, off-limits to commoners. Hawaiian traditions changed throughout the years, and today more recent ones are revealed on a tour of the Kona Coffee Living History Farm, first homesteaded in 1900. Your visit brings to life the story of some of Hawaii’s coffee pioneers by depicting the daily lives of early Japanese immigrants, in a setting that includes historic buildings and
costumed interpreters. See another aspect of Hawaiian cultural history at the “Painted Church”– with brightly coloured murals adorning the walls and ceiling; the artwork depicting Biblical scenes were hand-painted by a Belgian missionary around the turn of the 20th century and seem to echo the frescoes found in medieval chapels in Europe. Enjoy free time before this evening’s farewell reception and dinner. Meals BD
12. JOURNEY HOME Tour ends: Hawaii’s Big Island. Fly home anytime; a transfer from The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii to Kona International Airport is included. You should allow a minimum of two hours for your flight check-in at the airport. Meals B
