The second study, the COGfx Buildingomics Study, examined real-world building environments to determine whether the green certifi cation of already high-performing buildings would result in higher cognitive function test scores and health benefi ts for occupants.


Employees in green-certifi ed buildings showed 26% higher cognitive function test scores and 30% fewer sick building symptoms versus high performing buildings that were not green-certifi ed. They also saw the following benefi ts:


■ 73% higher crisis response scores ■ 44% higher applied activity level scores, which refl ect ability to gear decision-making toward overall goals

■ 38% higher focused activity level scores, which refl ect capacity to pay attention to tasks at hand ■ 31% higher strategic thinking scores.

s part of an expansion programme to increase production PrimePac, a Northern Ireland-based manufacturer, had to grow cooling capacity by 25%. Having called in long-term partner and temperature control specialists, ICS Cool Energy, the solution is now delivering higher performance plus an estimated £20,000 a year in energy savings.


The business employs some 35 people and, with increasing demand for its range of consumables, production has expanded with PrimePac now operating 24 hours a day during the working week. But in plastics manufacturing, cooling represents a high proportion of energy use so given the need for a future-proof system, energy savings were part of the brief for ICS Cool Energy.


Free cooling option


“We knew we needed to replace some ageing equipment as part of our production investment and it made sense to get ICS Cool Energy in to recommend the best solution. We’ve had a good working relationship with them for about 25 years and trust their expertise,” said Eddie Rath, PrimePac’s managing director. “The recommendation was a free cooling option as it offers us what we need and although it’s difficult to get a precise handle on energy savings and costs, annual savings of £20,000 a year is realistic.” Richard Metcalfe, sales director at ICS Cool Energy, said: “A chiller can be one of the most energy-intensive pieces of equipment to run. However, by integrating free cooling into a chiller system, you can negate a certain percentage of the energy consumed by the chiller.


A green lig savings


ICS Cool Energy has provided a green light for energy savings at PrimePac, a plastics manufacturer supplying packaging products for leading international household brands found in thousands of national retailers such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Boots and B&Q.
