VVR innovates inverters


James Henley, chiller product manager at Daikin Applied UK takes a look at the evolution of chillers.

hiller compressor technology has evolved over the years from the reciprocating compressor of the 1980s through to the screw and scroll compressors of the 2000s and now with the introduction of inverter screw technology, coupled with variable volume ratio VVR technology, which is driving chiller energy efficiency to new heights.


 Until 10 years ago the only declaration of efficiency on chillers


was the full load Coefficient of Performance (COP) or Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) based on full load operation at 35°C ambient – peak summer conditions.


The reality for UK chiller operation is that the chiller will hardly ever run at these conditions and the expected building energy performance was in turn difficult to calculate. This changed with the introduction of European Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (ESEER) and latterly the UK specific building design SEER.
