Franchise Focus A bright spark

John Davidson, founder of gas-elec, explains why his business is the largest M&E franchisor in the industry

INVESTMENT LEVEL: FROM £20,000 John Davidson J

ohn Davidson, founder and managing director of gas-elec, is a mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems entrepreneur and franchised his company 20 years

ago. gas-elec provides gas and electrical safety checks, boiler services, and smoke, carbon monoxide and Legionella testing for over 80,000 UK properties. John said: “A former M&E engineer myself, I know that being excellent at what you do is only half the story. If you’re a sole trader or a small business, then you also have to be a great marketer. Larger companies can afford specialist support to keep their brand visible, leaving engineers free to do what they do best. However, as 95 per cent of UK businesses are micro-businesses, employing nine people or fewer, most engineers have to do the marketing themselves. You may have extraordinarily good testimonials, and word-of-mouth is one of the best marketing tools any company can have, but it needs to be managed if you want to

realise its potential.

“So, over 20 years ago, I saw the business opportunity in creating a franchising organisation that would generate work, do the paperwork (including invoicing), and make a positive difference to engineers’ work-life balance. With franchising, you have the freedom of self-employment, a support system and a record of success. While all franchisors have their own way of operating, some, like gas-elec, do the tedious hard work, leaving engineers to concentrate on their skills. Excellent earnings are possible with gas-elec once you are up and running; 45 per cent of our franchisees earn between £65,000 and £70,000 in year one. “The lack of social housing has meant

the growth of the rented sector; this will provide opportunities for our engineers to grow their businesses. We have 100 franchisees currently in our network and vacant postcode areas across the UK.”
