he food and drink market runs the gamut from quick-service restaurants to fi ne dining. With a cuisine to suit even the fussiest tastes, it’s no


wonder that the area is expanding at an astronomical rate and shows no signs of stopping. In fact, the total amount spent on eating and drinking by the UK public in 2016 was £201billion.* But, in a refl ection of the modern busy lifestyle, fast food is outgrowing all other


sectors. According to recent market research carried out by IBISWorld, the industry is now worth £18billion. Franchisees from both sides of this sector – from the well established (quick-service giants Subway) to the up and coming (gourmet pizza delivery service basilico) – reveal all about what it’s like to run a business in this fi eld. Not only that, an Esquires franchise owner discusses how he took advantage of the massive UK coffee shop market.


With new cafés opening all the time (and tea consumption continuing to decline), it’s no surprise the market now stands at £7.9billion.** However, these fi gures mean this is a very competitive industry – you will therefore need to be diligent, determined and dedicated.
