most of the stallions had achieved. Each of the owners had selected music to suit their stallion to play in the background and it was fabulous hearing the lyrics match up to the ‘dancing’ boys.

The viewing gallery was full from start to finish, with standing room only at times and there was a bustle in the trade stands all day long. Every attendee was given a complimentary issue of equine containing the programme of stallions forward for the day. With the breeding season just around the corner, a lot of mare owners were present in the audience, with others there just for a day out. Linda Henderson of the Dorlyn Stud had travelled from Morpeth in Northumberland to the event, as she has two mares to put to a stallion this year. “Where else would you see such a selection?” said Linda of the showcase, continuing; “It’s a long way to Penrith but having all the boys in one spot saves you the hassle of travelling around different studs; it also lets you see the temperaments of the stallions in an environment away from home and gives you the chance to compare each of them easily. It’s been a very worthwhile day out”. Sandy Hodgson and Sam Arthur- Magennis made the return journey from Silloth, having selected their choice of suitor after attending the showcase last
year. Enjoying their day out they said; “Today has helped us make our mind up which stallion to use this year. It is brilliant to have an event like this in the area, as not a lot happens up North”.
Newton Rigg was praised for its easy access, being in close proximity to the M6 motorway, with a number of people having travelled a great distance to be at the showcase. Mike Rawlinson and Sheila Dickson travelled from Kelso in the Scottish Borders specifically to see the unrivalled number of Connemara sires on offer. Last term they served mares with Sir Lancelot from the Barrowby Stud, but expressed a view shared by others that it was great to see so many different stallions in one place.
Of the seven Connemara stallions present, four hailed from Glenwood Stud, owned by Rob and Val Williams based just outside Newcastle upon Tyne. They have joined forces with the Rock Island Stud to stand an additional three Connemaras this season; Castleside Tigue, Castleside JJ Junior and Supernova who were all making their first public appearance on British spoil, having only crossed the Irish Sea a few weeks prior to the showcase. Val confirmed that it was important to them to have three horses from each of the studs (Glenwood
