native roundup Fell Tara and April stand supreme Equine finds out more about the young native pony enthusiast from Co Durham
My name is Tara Robinson and I am 15 years old. I have two ponies and I produce them from home myself. Our yard is at Darlington and has six stables and four acres of land.
My main competition discipline is showing, my mum has always done showing and she passed the love of it onto me. We both show at County level and we like to take the horses to an off road riding track close to us. My mum also sometimes hacks my fell pony out.
I own two horses; one use to be my mum’s horse, on which I have now taken over the ride. His name is Royal Doulton, stable name Robbie and he is 21 years old. He has been 2nd at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) twice; he has won at the Royal International and was also Reserve Champion. He was also 15+ Supreme National Champion. I also have a 15-year-old fell pony called Hedgethorpe April Morning and her stable name is April. She has had much success both under saddle and in hand. She was 1st and Reserve Champion at Borrowby show, 1st and reserve champion NECWPCA, 1st , Champion and Overall Supreme Champion NCPA North Yorkshire and Durham. April has also had a successful career in working hunter ponies with her previous owner (her breeder), winning at Ponies UK, where she was reserve champion too.
We have only just started our show season and my highlight so far has to be winning the Overall Supreme Champion at NCPA North Yorkshire and Durham with my fell pony April. I am looking forward to the rest of the show season. I only started showing myself last year as I have always been nervous riding horses
Tara and Hedgethorpe April Morning were photographed at the recent NCPA Yorkshire and Durham by Tara’s mum, where they began with a win in the home produced large breeds, going on to take the home produced Championship and ended the day by standing Supreme Champion. April is by the prolific winning Fell stallion Severnvale Hector out of Castlerigg Duchess and has had a very successful career. Tara says; “I home produce April myself, she is a very special horse and we have a lovely bond.”
until I got April - she changed my life and made lots of my dreams come true. There are two shows in particular that I really enjoy; one is Borrowby show, which was only our third show together and I was really nervous about going in the ring. We won the class then got Reserve Champion! The other
show is NCPA North Yorkshire and Durham, which was our first show of this season, where we got Overall Supreme Champion! I was very pleased.
My mum is my trainer and we hire an Indoor school up the road every Wednesday. I do all the yard tasks myself.

My ultimate dream is to ride at HOYS with my fell pony April and I would also love to go to Olympia with my mum’s large hack (my new ride) Royal Doulton. I am going to do a few HOYS qualifiers with my fell pony. And also do Olympia qualifiers with my mums horse.
