intro

It’s been a busy few weeks, as anyone who was able to come along to the Northern Stallion Showcase will appreciate. What a super day we all had, with a fabulous programme of stallions representing many different breeds and types; there was even a TV news crew to capture the occasion! You can get a flavour of how it all went starting on page 56.

As the competition season gets into full swing, this issue has advice on everything from how to avoid the risk of laminitis to checking the fit of your saddle, and from managing the inevitable injuries which crop up from time to time to how to walk a cross country course.

Paragon Equine looks at the equine back and explains what can go wrong, with practical advice on how problems are diagnosed, treated and managed.

Spring Casual Wear is the subject for The Big Test this month and there are some super new products that should be on your shopping list! Find out what our panel recommends. starting on page 22.

Managing your grazing is a seemingly never-ending task, but armed with the practical advice in this month’s Gourmet Grazing, you’ll be well able to keep on top of this particular aspect of equine management.

The first of the swallows arrived back with us just as this issue went to print and for me, that really marks the arrival of spring. However with a last ditch cold snap in the forecast, maybe we shouldn’t be sending all the rugs off to be cleaned and proofed quite yet! I always think, ‘off with the rugs, out with the fly repellent’ and there have certainly been a few still and ‘midgy’ mornings recently. As yet though, there aren’t really any flies and to have warm, sunny days, without the fly nuisance is wonderful and one of the reasons why this is my favourite time of year. Summer is just around the corner and hopefully we’ll have some ‘proper’ summer weather this year. So enjoy your horses and remember to stay safe.
