British Endurance Protocol takes shape
Following agreement in February that Endurance GB and the British Equestrian Federation would work together to develop a new British protocol for all future international rides in Great Britain, significant progress has been made.
A working party, led by Dr. Tim Watson, BEF Board Director, have met and discussed developing a protocol that not only helps build a long-term UK strategy regarding horse welfare, but further enhances our UK offering with an ultimate goal of increasing participation in international and high-level competition.
Following a number of meetings, a period of consultation was launched to seek the views of a random selection of FEI riders, ride organisers, officials and those aspiring to ride at that level. On analysis of the results, and a substantial amount of historic ride data, the working group are now in a position to test the new protocol at the Kings Forest
ride. The results of the 80KM Competitive Endurance Ride class at Kings Forest will be analysed using the parameters that the working group are recommending, and the criteria will then be further assessed for their suitability to be introduced at all FEI and CER rides in England and Wales. Results of the analysis will be available on the Endurance GB website following the ride, at which time a summary of the criteria will also be available.
The objectives of the new protocol are to reward good horsemanship at our competitive and FEI rides in this country, devise a transparent method for appointing FEI officials, suggest ways to increase participation and recommend improvements to publicise clean sport. The process of refining a British Protocol that works for all is an interactive one and will be refined over the coming weeks, taking into account the information presented at the FEI’s Sport’s Forum.
Backing for Hartpury Student Conference
Alltech is once again supporting the Hartpury Student Conference, this year to be held at Hartpury College on Wednesday May 3. Now in its seventh successful year, this annual conference is aimed at both undergraduate and postgraduate students who are interested in research to enhance performance in equestrian athletes, with the opportunity to submit findings from their own research. Students are invited to submit research papers within the field of Equestrian Science including the broad themes of equine behaviour and welfare; equine business management; breeding,
genetics and stud management; equine health and therapy; equine nutrition and feeding and rider performance.
Successful students will have the opportunity to deliver a verbal presentation on their findings to a conference audience, with a dedicated question time afterwards.
Guest presentations will be delivered by key note speakers, Dr Lisa Boden from the University of Glasgow and Professor Renate Weller from the Royal Veterinary College. Alltech will provide prizes for award to the best presentations within each category.
BEVA’s MumsVet introduces Bump Protector to keep pregnant vets safer

MumsVet, the British Equine Veterinary Association’s (BEVA) online information and support network for equine veterinary professionals who are balancing work with parenthood, has introduced the essential BEVA Bump Protector, to help pregnant equine vets feel safer in practice. Currently 55% of equine practitioners are female and the new BEVA Bump Protector will help to keep them safer in the workplace during pregnancy. Lightweight, fully adjustable and designed to fit ergonomically across all shapes and sizes of bump, this clever bit of personal protection equipment is a must for any equine practice. The Association strongly is advising all equine veterinary practices to keep one in stock to help keep
members of their veterinary team protected whilst at work. Vicki Nicholls, President of BEVA and one of the founders of MumsVet, came up with the innovative idea having been asked by a newly pregnant friend whether there was some sort of padded bump cover that she could wear on her forthcoming ski trip, to give her piece of mind on the slopes. Vicki said: “MumsVet has made us all so much more aware of the breadth of support BEVA should be offering to members during parenthood. We have become increasingly concerned about the risks posed to pregnant women and their bumps and we believe the BEVA Bump Protector is an essential piece of kit for any equine practice.”
Survey of tendon and ligament injuries to underpin research
As part of its development of new research and clinical trials into equine musculoskeletal injuries and their management, Applied Microcurrent Technology (AMT), the company which manufactures ArcEquine microcurrent units, has launched a major online survey evaluating tendon and ligament problems in working horses and ponies.
Running between April 24th and June 5th, the survey will collect data from owners and riders with experience of tendon and ligament injuries amongst equines in all disciplines. Respondents will

be asked about the incidence of these types of injuries, the mechanism of injury, severity, diagnosis, treatments, long term management and the frequency of re-injury. AMT Director of Research & Development, Jack Thirkell confirmed; “The data will be used to evaluate current treatment options and rehabilitation protocols, together with supporting our work in developing and funding new veterinary clinical trials, which will include more in- depth evaluation of the use of ArcEquine microcurrent technology.
The survey is available both on websites and social media. Responses from owners and riders of working horses and ponies at every level will be able to add their experiences to the bank of data collected. One lucky respondent, drawn at random after the survey closes, will win an ArcEquine complete kit.
