business spotlight
but when an owner contacts us to tell us how pleased they are with their DHI horse, we feel very proud.
Q7:
Has there ever been a time you wish you were doing something else? Usually November - January every year, when it’s cold and wet and I put ‘indoor school’ on my Christmas list and it doesn’t fit on Santa’s sleigh !!! But seriously - no, I couldn’t imagine wanting to do anything else.
Q8:
If you could pass on any advice to someone starting an equine business what would it be? Work harder than everyone else doing your job and stay focused on your goal, it will pay off in the end. (And buy good water proofs!)
Q9:
In order to get new trade what do you do? At DHI Event Horses we have built up a good following on Facebook, @dhieventhorses, and people frequently contact us with their ‘wish list’. We try to keep our website,
www.dhieventhorses.com as up to date as possible. We also support local events through sponsorship and do a limited amount of advertising.
Most of the time, people find us, as they have been recommended through previous clients. Q10:
What would you say differentiates your equine business from your competitors? We offer the whole package. When people come to view horses they have the use of a full cross country schooling field, including water splash and show jumping field, so they can get a feel for the horse they are considering purchasing. Quite often, when clients have bought a horse they come back and train with us so we are able
to help with the progression of the partnership. For us at DHI Event Horses, honesty is the biggest thing. We want our horses to go on and succeed at whatever level. If a horse isn’t going to suit a client, we’ll tell them.
Q11:
What has been your most memorable experience so far? Very hard to choose ….. Watching DHI Lupison win Bramham CCI 3* U25’s, with Holly (Woodhead) and progress on to being part of the 2015 Team GB European Championship Squad at Blair Castle. We didn’t buy Lupison (Luke) as a young horse, but we’re proud to have been a part of his development. Holly and Luke have a very special partnership and we’re looking forward to a great future for them.
DHI Beaunesse finishing 3rd at Bramham in 2016 with Emily Prangnell was special on many levels. The updates I get from people with our horses out competing every week is a very rewarding part of our business. On a personal level, watching Ian being awarded a BEF Medal of Honour at Olympia, in recognition of his work with the British Dressage Junior European Team, was a pretty memorable occasion too! And also sending Ian off to Rio in his Irish Team kit last year. I could go on and I’ve probably missed out several very significant experiences!
Q12:
Is there a particular type of product or service that is especially successful? We have fed #fibrebeet for a while now and we are grateful to British Horse Feeds for their sponsorship of our team of young horses this year. We have also been supported by Horse First Supplements for a long time. I really believe that using the right feed supplements to support the horses in their early days with us lays down a good foundation for their future.
Water jump – no problem - and onto the next Q13:
What item(s) in your wardrobe do you wear the most?
Breeches, boots and waterproofs !!!
Q14:
What is your philosophy? Work hard - try harder and try to accept the things that you can’t change. That’s the way it is sometimes !
Q15:
Do you own any animals , if so what are they? Our DHI Team Pups are very important to us and a big part of our daily goings on. Terriers have amazing personalities and they’re small enough to not make too much mess in the lorry when we travel to competitions!!! (I quite fancied having some
chickens at one point, but Ian pointed out that terriers and chickens aren’t a good mix.) We also play host to a vastly expanding family of swallows every year; obviously we don’t ‘own’ them, but they seem to keep coming back!
Q16:
What hobbies do you have outside of work?
Hmmmmm, not much goes on outside of work!! I feel like I’m ‘at the gym’ most of the day! Ian and I try to fit in a skiing holiday and a few days of ‘sunsleeping’ every so often, but we always end up working and keeping in touch with what’s going on at home and with horses out and about. That’s a good thing though, right?!!
