yard, stable & paddock of existing facilities

side open for internal access provided the greatest design challenge.

The result/benefits: Sam is delighted that nine of her horses are enjoying her new barn facility. “I could not be any happier with the presentation of the building. It looks so professional, but more importantly it meets the design requirements that I carefully specified to promote the welfare of my horses,” commented Sam.

“Ventilation is absolutely paramount,” continued Sam about her main benefit. “The wooden cladding and windows running down the side of the building have improved the ventilation and air flow inside the building, maximising the air turnover and helping to keep my horses’ lungs healthy. The windows included in five of the stables is an important design feature. Even though my horses are exercised each day, they still spend a considerable amount time in their stable; it is so beneficial that they can put their head outside and enjoy the scenery as it helps to prevent boredom, particularly during the winter months and shorter days.”

“The inclusion of the solarium is another very important welfare feature. The horses can be washed and cared for under the solarium inside the comfort of the barn, meaning that they do not have to get cold.”

Duane Roberts was responsible for the building design: “I find that horse owners are great at explaining the details of how they want their building to work. As building designers, we are then trained to take this information, look at the bigger picture and anticipate any potential challenges. It always makes a project more interesting to work on when the customer is as enthusiastic about their project as Sam was.”

Sam concludes; “The most beneficial design features are the height of the barn and the wide doorway. It is so much easier to drive the tractor inside for jobs such as unloading hay and feed. I highly recommend working with one building constructor for the duration of a project – for me this meant that all of the small details were captured and I could start to enjoy my barn straight away.”
