the big test

There are certain occasions when one needs to be clothed in something casual, but also smart. This usually sees us manically pulling items out of the wardrobe, looking and going ‘no that won’t do’! In this issue our panel of testers have been trying some amazing pieces of clothing and footwear, which will take you from the yard to the shops, or even out walking the dog with style!!

Casually Dressed and Ready to Go!!

Alan Paine – Wilshaw Windproof Jumper

The company says: This wool blend, half-zip, mock-neck men’s jumper with Windblock lining with a ‘tailored’ fit, is part of the English Explorer Collection inspired by our connection with the eminent English Mountaineer George Mallory. Mallory took part in three expeditions to Mount Everest, the final one being his last when he and his climbing partner disappeared somewhere on the North-East ridge on 8th June 1924. The Collection features updated classic English garments reminiscent of those worn by Mallory on his ill-fated final expedition. Navy, Mouse, Evergreen. Sizes: 38-50”. RRP: £104.00 www.alanpaine.co.uk

Our tester, Peter Bulman, says: An extremely presentable jumper. It is a very good, neat ‘tailored fit’, not loose and ‘hangy’ like a lot of jumpers, thus very comfortable when wearing (and smart). I did find putting it on a bit tight, but that was simply because of the fit, which is different to the styles I normally wear. Its integral (windblock) lining does its job well, but this makes you notice your hands and face being cold more! All in all a superb product suitable for when you need to keep warm, yet still be smart. If you like your jumpers slightly looser though, go up a size.

Rockfish – Short & Lacey Wellies

The company says: A super cute, a slip on bootie with fixed decorative laces. Perfect for outdoors in drier weather whilst still boggy underfoot!! Made from Natural Rubber so resistant to horse urine. Eyelet & hook lace up front placket and a durable, quick-dry polyester lining enabling them to slip on and off easily. Shock absorbing foam insole and foot bead. Cleated heel and grip bars across the outer sole. Poppy/Choc, Confetti/Gumdrop, Navy/Black, Nude/Black, Caraffe/ Choc, Blossom. Sizes: 3-8 www.rockfishwellies.com

Our tester, Caroline Mosley, says: Lovely, comfortable and stylish wellies. I received them with the cream laces but there were black ones also in the box, to which I changed them, as I liked the darker look. They were very comfortable when I first put them on and as the laces are for decoration, they slip on and off easily. I did not have any socks sliding down to end up wrinkling up at my toes which was fantastic as its very annoying when that happens! I wore them with skinny jeans to nip to the shops and with breeches for everyday wear. I had a few friends compliment me with them. I felt guilty using them to walk the dog but they are perfect for muddy, slippery paths, especially as the sole is very ‘grippy’ too. Very comfy!

Equisafety – Charlotte Dujardin Arret Waistcoat

The company says: Lightweight, breathable and waterproof fabric, featuring a two-way zip, two hidden side pockets, open back vents for ease of use while in the saddle, gorgeous designer lining and the not to be forgotten sparkling silver reflective stripes which sweep across the shoulders and curve beautifully down the sides offering a figure- hugging illusion. Oh, and don’t forget that iconic CD logo which is ‘reflectively’ featured on the front and again on the back! Orange/Red, Pink and Yellow. Sizes: XS (6-8); S (8-10); M (10-12); L (14-16): XL (16-18); XXL (18-20). RRP: £49.99 www.equisafety.com

Our tester, Clare Chappelhow, says: This company has taken the high vis tabard/waistcoat into another league and this one is designed to be stylish along with its safety features to be seen, whilst riding. It is very comfortable to wear with an easy two way zip fastening at the front, along with two very useful, discreet side zip pockets. Everything a rider requires in a smart high-vis waistcoat! Whilst I was hacking along a farm track, a tractor was working in the field alongside, and because I was visible through the trees, he waited till I had passed before continuing his work; how thoughtful. True to size so when you choose yours, decide what you will be wearing the waistcoat over. I was given a medium size to try, which was fine over my thick ski jacket, but when we had a brief spell of spring weather and I wore a lighter weight jacket under it, it allowed the Helm wind to have a bit of fun, which was not the best idea, when I was riding ‘nervous nelly’! So I may have to purchase a smaller size for safe summer riding on the young inexperienced horses! I think this is an essential wardrobe item for any rider wishing to be safe, seen and smart whilst out riding

PK Sportswear – Cowgirl T’Shirt

The company says: Which horse-lover doesn’t think ‘I should have been a cowgirl’ every now and then? This is a fun t-shirt featuring a bold, stand-out message and PK logo on the front. The soft cotton- blend melange fabric makes it ideal as a comfortable t-shirt for everyday wear. Melange Pearl. Sizes: XS/34 to XXL/44. RRP: £25.00 www. zebraproducts.co.uk

Our tester, Susan Chappelhow, says: I loved this from the moment it arrived. It has a great design on it and the style is fabulous as it is shaped to fit a lady’s body. I’ve worn it casually with jeans around the house, yard and nipping to the shops, and have also worn it underneath my competition clothes when I needed that extra layer, which it worked perfectly as!! Washed and dried very well with no shrinkage even with my washing skills.
