Helping to "power the future" at Glasgow Science Centre
Signs Express has worked together with Glasgow Science Centre on a new interac- tive exhibition. "Powering The Future" is the most ambitious exhibition of its kind in the UK, which focuses on the science and tech- nology used to supply energy in the UK. It highlights key issues that society is likely to face in the not too distant future. The £1.5million project has been designed to stimulate public debate and engagement with the key issues around the energy ‘trilemma’ – security, affordability, and envi- ronment sustainability.
Signs Express had the challenging task of organising and manufacturing the new dis- plays and signage at their unit.
Over three weeks, from initial design, there were numerous elements to the work car- ried out by Signs Express, such as interac- tive display panels, exhibit interpretation boards, built up text and various bespoke items. There were also various illuminated displays such as the entrance sign, the Biowall sign (a living wall system containing a range of different plant species) and the Dancefloor (expending energy in the form of dancing).
This was the third major project that Signs Express worked on with Glasgow Science Centre. Graham Casey, Signs Express

(Glasgow’s) owner said: “We really enjoy working with the science centre and were thrilled to be asked to help with this project. Due to the size of it, it demanded all of the in-house equipment, and used all the skills in the team, to make sure we completed the
work to the highest standard. I am ex- tremely proud of the team and the work they delivered.”
Glasgow Science Centre’s Director of Science, Dr Robin Hoyle, said: "Due to the complexity and scale of the content, artwork sign-off was managed in batches by GSC. Signs Express were very accom- modating of this, despite it not being the ideal situation for their production requirements."
Signs Express integrated graphics with set work and exhibits, working with numerous other subcontractors. They delivered the project to a high standard, on-time and within budget as with previous projects that they have worked on with GSC.
"Signs Express always find a solution to our challenging brief, whether it be hundreds of custom cut dibond panels, suspended light- boxes, back-lit acrylic lettering, bespoke acrylic design features or frosted window graphics. All of these elements brought the finishing touch to Powering the Future, and pulled together all the themes of the exhibi- tion to give a cohesive overall design," says the company.
