BUILT UP LETTERS
Built-up letters at work in exterior applications
When producing built up letters, there are a number of things to consider – such as size, shape, material, and illumi- nation.
However, many people still leave fabricat- ing and fixing as an afterthought and deal
with it at the last minute, which can make it difficult to find the right solution.
ZULU Signs used INDASOL products to create built-up lettering on the Hawkridge totem installation
ZULU Signs recently created a Hawkridge totem installation, and to steer clear of any issues, MD Matt Albert enlisted the help of INDASOL. The products selected were two versions of the INDASOL Ultra High Bond (UHB) system, the Tensol 12 alternative and 912LX two part adhesive. The UHB system is a pure foamed acrylic bonding system ideally suited to bonding diffi- cult and dissimilar substrates. “The UHB18SF was used for fabricating the trays, the UHB9120G was used for fixing the supports together, and the Tensol alternative 2100 was used for the acrylic fabrication,” reveals Paul Robinson, Sales Director of INDASOL. “Finally, the 912LX was chosen for mounting the stand off
locators, which help raise the sign. THE 912LX product is designed to provide a strong long-term bond without causing any read through on the face of composite panels.”
Working closely with customers such as ZULU Signs, INDASOL has been able to tailor their range to specific applications and requirements, and have products that can offer either flush or fused bonds, gap filling and flexibility. According to Paul, the latter is one of the key requirements when working with dis-similar materials in built up letters. “Our range is evolving all the time to keep pace with the new materials being used, and as such, we have recently added SIGN- BONDER Crystal,” he says. “This compli- ments SIGNBONDER white and black with the obvious benefit of being completely clear, but still retaining the same high strength durable properties of the coloured versions.”

Built-up letters and shapes bring life to seasonal retail displays
Having started his career as a window dresser, Graham Sweet learned a great deal about how to put together eye- catching retail displays.
Graham worked as a window dresser in New Zealand and Australia before returning to his native Wales. Upon discovering he couldn’t find a job locally, he started his own business, Graham Sweet Studios, in 1969. Today, they are a large manufacturer of polystyrene letters and shapes that are used not only by major retailers, but also by television and film designers. “I’m more than just a manufacturer – I know what these people want, because I used to be one of them,” says Graham. This time of year, he and the team are busy creating numerous large hanging baubles, some of which measure up to 120cm in diameter, that are glittered and sent out to shops for use in Christmas seasonal retail displays.
Glittered built-up letters are especially popular this time of year. 50 Sign Update ISSUE 167 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016
