WELCOME Page A bounty
Autumn is a productive season, so we bring you this issue, which is bursting with features, projects and products.
The digital printable media feature looks at the latest products, in particular those that are easy to apply. And I'm hoping that the self adhesive vinyl I've just bought to customise some furni- ture is as easy to apply as it claims! I'm sure it will give me a new respect for those you use vinyl to wrap vehicles, and get such a smooth finish. And to achieve a good finish on printed media, Chris Green from Antalis give his top tips. It's also great to read about the new prod- ucts that are better for the environment, such as Innotech's PVC free material for banners. Also Grafityp tell us about their environmentally friendly Colibri film, to meet their customers need for cost effective, PVC free products.
Two favourite subjects are covered in the built up letters and traditional sign making features. Not only is it the size, scale and production of channel letters that is so impressive, it's also light- ing them, which makes such a difference to the result. Centre Signs (UK) explain how they've integrated new LED technology into lighting stainless steel letters to enable halo and edge lit illumination at the same time. And ZULU Signs explain how they consider fabrication and fix- ing at the beginning of the project, rather than as an after thought, to make sure they find the right solution.
And feast your eyes on what signmakers are creating by hand painting signs, using materials that have been around for a long time. Although Nick Garrett says the term 'traditional sign- writer' doesn't fit anymore, as they use smart technology or a roll of masking tape, alongside their brushes and paints. More and more courses are available for those wanting to learn this art form, such as those run by Wayne Tanswell, who is passionate about teaching the next generation of signwriters.
Also, don't miss the interview with Stuart Cole from Hybrid Services, about Mimaki's grand for- mat printer and why it's been getting so much attention since its launch at FESPA 2016.
Till the next time... Kathryn
