A bleak January - but there’s hope for the future

Goodbye to January 2016. A Chamber CEO ought to work hard at positivity and cheerful optimism but I will be honest and admit that I am not sorry to wave farewell to the first month of the year. It may simply be that we lost far too many

familiar faces from our cultural life. I was especially thumped by David Bowie’s death. Some people are almost subconscious reference points in our lives I guess and I now realise he was for me. Or it may be that we have now named our

storms and made them somehow more notably grim. Frankly, I think I’d prefer to let wind and rain remain anonymous. Or it may be that we’ve had a good go at scaring ourselves with fluctuating stock markets, Chinese economic adjustment and dramatically lower oil prices. So I’m deliberately going to

have a look back at January and find the positives. Glasgow made the shortlist for

the European Capital of Innovation 2016 and a team from Glasgow City Council and Glasgow City of Science presented our case in Brussels. We are up against a formidable list of competitor cities, including Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Vienna and Milan, but we have an

excellent story to tell of innovative partnerships that bring business, government and academia together behind our research strengths. Read more at: www.glasgowchamberof

GLASGOW FARES WELL IN CITIES OUTLOOK – BUT WORK STILL TO DO Fresh analysis in this year’s Centre for Cities’ Cities Outlook, examines how 64 UK towns and cities are faring in the UK Government’s aim to achieve a high-wage low-welfare economy. Despite what you might expect,

Scottish cities, according to the report, tend to be doing rather better than their counterparts down south – with Edinburgh and Aberdeen qualifying as high- wage low-welfare economies alongside cities like Oxford, Cambridge and of course London. Glasgow, as the UK’s fourth

largest city, often shares characteristics with other large historically industrial cities like

Manchester and Birmingham, and sure enough they all have the challenges of a relatively high welfare bill. However, Glasgow is noticeably different in

one critical respect. Glaswegians – and the Centre for Cities takes a broadly regional definition of the city – tend to have much higher skill levels. Indeed Glasgow has the ninth highest skills performance in the list, making it second only to London amongst the top 10 largest UK cities. Read more at: www.glasgowchamberof

NEW TECHNOLOGIES CAN ALLOW REGROWTH OF MANUFACTURING The need to improve industrial productivity has become something of a given in our economic development debate. But what if we also paid more attention to the

regrowth of our manufacturing base? For years we’ve assumed that we can’t compete with lower wage economies. But alongside our productivity challenge we have an export deficit and a poor record in business research and development. Some 80 per cent of Europe’s exports and research and development depend on manufacturing. Making more products for trading around the world could make a difference.
