“Glasgow is one of the best cities in the world in terms of investment in leisure”

buoyancy of the market which continues to appeal to a wide variety of businesses.” Glasgow City Council’s Sauchiehall Street

and Garnethill regeneration schemes with accompanying improvements to the public realm will be delivered in the next few months. Te Council will also come out with its

new Glasgow Economic Strategy that will shape economic development activity over the next few years. Te SECC will announce its plans for the

redevelopment of the SSE Hydro and other facilities in the coming year. Te importance of the SSE Hydro was

highlighted in recent comments from Derek Casey, the former Bid Director for Glasgow 2014. Highlighting the importance of top class

leisure facilities in Glasgow competing for global investment, Mr Casey said the Hydro could help identify the city around the world. He said: “Glasgow is one of the best cities

in the world in terms of investment in leisure. It always has been, from Kelvingrove Park in Victorian times right through to the Hydro today, the city has invested.” Along with infrastructure and skills,

Mr Casey highlighted leisure as an important selling point when bringing jobs to a city. He added: “Glasgow is trying to atract inward investment. Te same indices, which

people want to move to a city, are the same as what companies look for to locate there. Tey want a healthier and greener place. What’s important is people will move there if people think it’s a good place to live.” Te long-awaited improvements in the

surface access to Glasgow Airport under the Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal will pass some key milestones this year. Work will soon begin on the £60 million

upgrade of Queen Street Station which, although it will cause disruption for 20 weeks, will allow faster and longer trains to use the station. Another key infrastructure decision with

significant economic impact is the Glasgow City Council £60 million go-ahead for the completion of major carriageway cuting through the city’s east end and linking two of Scotland’s busiest motorways. Councillors approved the East End

Regeneration Route, which will connect the M8/M80 and the M74 with a four-carriageway route scheduled for completion around 2021. Te new motorway section cuts through

residential areas of the east end, with a major eight-span viaduct being built to take it across the Glasgow to Airdrie railway line at Duke Street. Stuart said: “While there is much

discussion and debate about the tightness of budgets for the public sector, that is not the full story of what goes on in Glasgow and Scotland. “Even with the challenges that currently

face public spending and the decisions that are being made by government at different levels there is still a significant level of investment in Glasgow. Tat level of investment can be seen all around us and in all of the developments taking shape in Glasgow over the next few months.”
