28 . Glasgow Business February 2016
TO BE CHEERFUL ABOUT 15 REASONS
Glasgow Chamber of Commerce went from strength to strength in 2015 I
t was a year that would have easily been overshadowed by 2014, the year of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with all that brought to and brought
out of the city. But, in fact, it was a period in which there
were many significant steps forward for Glasgow Chamber, its wider networks and for the economy of the city region as a whole. Here we have chosen 15 highlights for 2015...
1. DEVELOPING THE YOUNG WORKFORCE
Bringing together 18 businesses and 18 schools in formal business partnership arrangements. Our team at Glasgow Chamber has achieved that in the space of eight months. Te partnerships enable businesses to help
the school concerned with a range of activities supporting the development of young people in a more consistent way to aid the students, school and business. Glasgow was also chosen to host the first
regional board for delivering the DYW programme. Following the interaction that Glasgow Chamber had with the Sir Ian Wood Commission and the fact that we have facilitated a Youth Employment Action Group, Glasgow was seen as the natural choice for the first regional employer board. Te Youth Employment Action Group’s Report with its 14 key recommendations meant that Glasgow was well on the way to delivering practical outcomes on this key issue.

2. BUCHANAN GALLERIES
Glasgow Chamber did quiet lobbying work that involved encouraging all the major players to keep the Buchanan Galleries expansion project on course. Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber, and the public affairs team engaged at a senior level with Scotish Government Ministers, key agencies and the project’s investors themselves. Tis engagement work focused on Buchanan Galleries as one of the city’s most important inward investment projects of this decade.
3. SAUCHIEHALL STREET BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT
With Chamber Board Member Brian Fulton chairing, Glasgow Chamber helped to encourage and support Glasgow City Council in its choice of Sauchiehall Street as its first district for investing Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal funding. Tis led to a wide consultation process and
the resulting ambitious proposals for the Sauchiehall Street district, with a clear funding route to the development of the Sauchiehall
