Life-changing I

Inspiring 1 of the 500

nspiring500 is a partnership between Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, MCR Pathways and Te Herald to support

disadvantaged young people in schools in the form of mentoring. Glasgow Chamber of Commerce members have been hugely supportive and we recently spent some time with George McKay from GCM Creative to find out why he is supporting this life-changing project.

What inspired you to become a mentor?

When I saw the work that was

being done with young people in Glasgow schools, I knew it was something that I could help with. Tat and the fact I have family links with the parts of Glasgow in which MCR Pathways operate.

Tell us something interesting you have shared with your mentee?

One of the most interesting things we have shared is the fact we both think that a French film, “Untouchable”, about a French quadriplegic man’s story, would be on our lists of top great movies!

George McKay, GCM Creative

What have you learnt from the experience to date?

I have learned that, once again, it’s beter to give rather than to take and that it is good to help.

How powerful do you think mentoring is for young people?

In my/our case, it’s still too early to tell, but I am optimistic that there will be a good outcome.

Has anything about the experience surprised you?

No, the only surprise is that there is no surprise when it comes to teenagers!

“Before I got a mentor I didn’t talk to many people and now I talk to most of my year group and I have made new friends. I am also writing a book. I never thought I could do this and now I feel I can do anything.”
