20 . Glasgow Business February 2016
EVENTS EXECUTIVE LUNCH WITH BOB FORRESTER
O
n 6 November 2015, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce welcomed American Bob
Forrester, President and CEO of Newman’s Own Foundation and Executive Chairman of Newman’s Own, Inc., as guest speaker at our Executive Lunch. Te quarterly lunch is designed
to put business leaders and inspirational speakers in front of a business audience. Forrester, a personal friend and philanthropic adviser to the late Academy Award-winning actor Paul Newman (who founded the Newman’s Own company and Foundation) discussed how his company has given upwards of
£300 million in 31 countries around the world (including Scotland). He regaled the 40 atendees with stories about the actor and discussed the importance of Glasgow’s business community supporting local charities. According to Forrester (whose
father was born in Glasgow), Newman’s Own really sprung out of Newman’s belief in, and appreciation of, luck. “Paul always spoke about how fortunate he was in his own life,” Forrester said. “He was born in America. He survived the Second World War when all of his regiment was wiped out. He looked a certain way and subsequently got acting jobs.” Even the founding of the food

company had its own fairy-tale beginnings. In 1980, the actor and his friend, writer A E Hotchner, gave their homemade salad
2016 EVENTS SCHEDULE » A full programme is planned for our members
Over the last couple of years, we have strived to deliver events that touch every business sector in the city and have been designed to meet the needs of our membership. Some of our highlights include
looking at the city centre of the future at Think Digital Scotland: Tomorrow’s City Centre; listening to members’ own business journeys at CROWD; delivering Warm-Up breakfast sessions during the Commonwealth Games and the All-Energy Conference; highlighting leadership and business opportunities in the city and energy markets; hearing from iconic business and political leaders at Glasgow Talks including Jim McColl OBE and Nicola Sturgeon; and seeing the return and growth of our traditional core networking events, including the Reaction Chamber and After Hours events.
One particular event in 2015
that stood out was our ‘Fortune Favours the Bold’ business breakfast delivered in partnership
with Business Stream. Marking the launch of the Business Stream White Paper, which examined the topic of Boldness in Business, delegates heard from speakers from all business sizes, with the clear message that while mapping a route to success in your business plan, you should also adopt a clear role for boldness in the planning process.
This will help you achieve
better results for your business, your customers and the economy. It challenged us all to think about our decision-making process and how we can foster that feeling within our workforce. So what lies ahead for our
2016 events schedule? In addition to the regular networking events that are at the core of the Chamber’s offering, the schedule will also feature:
Think Digital Scotland: Tomorrow’s City Centre – late spring 2016 A business summit that will look at the use of Big Data to make the
city work smartly for your business All-Energy 2016 Warm-Ups – May 2016 Return of the Warm-Up Breakfasts at this significant national energy conference
Zero Waste Scotland Business Summit – late spring 2016 A summit looking at the Circular Economy and how it can impact on your business
Inspiring City Awards - September 2016 Recognising those who give back to the City of Glasgow in a positive way
The Glasgow Business Awards - October 2016 Promoting business achievements and celebrating success
Glasgow Talks… monthly Our business leaders’ series of events
dressing to their neighbours in Connecticut. Te dressing was so well received, the pair decided to go into business. In the first year alone, profits exceeded £150,000. One of the charities that
benefits from Newman’s largesse is Over Te Wall, the UK branch of Newman’s SeriousFun camps for children. Scotsman Kevin Mathieson, the charity’s CEO, was at the lunch and discussed how the charity provides free therapeutic camps for seriously ill children and their siblings. He also discussed how the children blossom at the camps. “Parents write to me and say that you gave me my child back. Tank you!” Several camps are held in
Scotland, and Forrester and Mathieson encouraged delegates to think about volunteering in 2016.
