Airport celebrates stellar year

Glasgow Airport entered 2016 on the back of an annual performance that was set to see it record its busiest year since 2008. Its figures for November,

the latest available at time of going to press, showed a year- on-year rise of 7.7 per cent to 618,583 passengers. International traffic grew

by 12.2 per cent due to strong demand for new routes to eastern European cities, including Wizz Air’s services to Budapest, Vilnius and Lublin and Ryanair’s service to Berlin. Domestic traffic grew by 4.5

per cent with Flybe’s reinstated service to Exeter proving popular and easyJet responding to strong demand for its London flights with an increase in capacity on its Gatwick and Stansted services.

Amanda McMillan, Managing

Director of Glasgow Airport, said: “2015 was a fantastic year in terms of passenger growth. Our November figures not only guaranteed we ended the year on a high, they also ensured we were in a strong position as we prepared to enter 2016, the airport’s 50th anniversary year.” In addition to the Christmas

getaway, December also saw easyJet’s new service to Milan being introduced, plus both Blue Air and Wizz Air beginning services to the Romanian capital Bucharest while British Airways started a new service to Salzburg for the ski season. She said: “An added bonus

to round off November was being named the Best Airport in the UK by our trade body, that made us the first UK airport to hold the top three industry awards at the same time.” Over the past 12 months,

Glasgow Airport has secured 26 new routes and services. In November, easyJet announced a new service to Marseille for summer 2016 and Ryanair launched a route to Berlin.

Plans revealed for airport-city rail link

» Plans for airport rail link have taken a major step forward A

scheme to build a tram-train link is one of two options being put forward to

connect Glasgow city centre, Paisley and Glasgow Airport as the flagship project in the £1.13bn Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal. Under this scheme, tram-train

carriages would operate on the heavy rail network between Glasgow Central Station and Paisley Gilmour Street before moving on to new tram rails running between Paisley and the

front of the airport terminal building. Tis would offer a 16.5-minute direct journey between the city centre and the airport’s front door. A light rail personal rapid transit

system is also being considered. Under this scheme, passengers would travel by standard train to Paisley before disembarking and changing onto a new light-rail system to complete their journey to the airport. Studies have shown that

tram-train would be the best performing option, offering the

best value for money, due to its greater atraction for users. Tis would result in more people using the service and beter journey times for people travelling to and from the airport. It would come in at less than

half the cost of a new heavy rail solution, which would cost an estimated £317m and is being ruled out as being too expensive. Te tram-train and personal

rapid transit schemes are contained in a strategic business case developed jointly by Renfrewshire Council and Glasgow City Council.
