Glasgow: a dream city for property investors
I have a special interest in growing our work to help members to access international markets. We are drawing up our Business Plan for the next three years and we would like to see Glasgow Chamber making much more of the international Chambers network than we have been able to do to date. For most of the week, though, I will be at MIPIM UK in Earls Court, supporting the Glasgow team in promoting the city to potential investors. Read more at:

The Glasgow Business Awards are an opportunity to say some positive things about the city over the last 12 months. Read more at:

It was especially cheering to be presented with very clear evidence at The Glasgow Business Awards that social responsibility is alive and well in a very traditional form here in Glasgow.
John Watson sold his family printing business last year so that he could retire. He led that business for 48 years through some of the most dramatic technical challenges printing has faced since its invention over 500 years ago.
Since retiral, he has been making several large donations to causes he feels are important to his family and to the city.
The Chamber was delighted to receive a
cheque for £100,000 at the Awards ceremony. John set us a challenge to use the money to invest in helping growing young businesses in Glasgow who might become the corporate giants of the future. Read more at:

Are we really sure that legislating on the governance of universities is wise? I ask because I count the university sector as one of Scotland’s

outstanding success stories and I’m no longer sure what we think we’re fi xing by interfering in the independence of such important civic institutions.
Universities Scotland certainly doesn’t think it’s helpful and they do make some concerning points. The consequences, for example, for
universities’ charitable status of overdoing
increased Government infl uence hardly look worth the risk. That status is critical in securing research funding from many foundations. It’s worth remembering just what universities
achieve. They’re the reason Glasgow has more of its workforce educated to at least degree level than any of the 10 biggest cities in the UK outside London – one of the 10 reasons for Glasgow being an economic powerhouse. That alone makes for a competitive off er when the city is pitching for inward investment.
