Glasgow Talks… The Business of Holidays
HEATHROW IS STILL BEST BET Laurie Berryman Bill Munro
Laurie Berryman, UK Vice-President of Emirates, outlined the factors in the rise of the airline to become one of the world’s largest international carriers.
Berryman has been at the helm
of the airline’s UK operations since 2010, having joined when Emirates was about to launch its first UK-Dubai flights from Manchester in 1990. He now manages Emirates’
current 116 weekly flights from six UK airports including Glasgow where there has been a daily service since 2004, with a second daily Glasgow- Dubai flight being introduced in June 2012.
He said that his own connection
to Glasgow dated back to the Seventies when he was working for British Caledonian. He indicated that the growth
of the airline was partly due to the position of its geographical base - five billion people live within an eight-hour flight from Dubai. “In my early days in Emirates, nobody knew who we were,” Mr Berryman said. A key part of the Emirates
success story was the airline’s continual efforts to build its brand, which had been achieved through

key sports sponsorships including Chelsea FC and the Arsenal stadium. Bill Munro, Chairman of Barrhead Travel Group – a Glasgow business that has risen to become the UK's number one online travel agent and largest independent travel agent in Scotland – then joined a question and answer session with Mr Berryman. In answer to a question, Mr Berryman said that quality and service was key to what Emirates offers. “We will never be the cheapest – we don’t believe we’re competing on price. We’ll be competitive.” Emirates’ approach to quality and
innovation had seen it become the first airline to introduce seatback TVs in every class. Mr Munro talked about the changing habits of people booking holidays: “Most people start with a mobile phone or tablet and then, once they’ve done some research, will lift the phone.” He said that his company was
able to source the best deals from hotel owners because they gave direct recommendations to their customers because of their knowledge of the hotels. He said: “We are less and less a travel agent and more and more a travel operator.”

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce has reaffirmed its backing for London Heathrow Airport to be chosen as the site for a new runway amid strong lobbying by Gatwick Airport. It has underlined the arguments made in the submission to the Sir
Howard Davies-led Airport Commission that Heathrow is the only London airport with the potential to be a true international hub and that is what will benefit West of Scotland businesses most. Heathrow is the UK airport with the most long haul connections, giving
Glasgow business people the greatest opportunity to get to the largest number of international business destinations. Glasgow Chamber believes that a London hub is preferable because of
the extent of business interaction between Scotland and London, which in turn supports the frequency of flights to the hub airport. Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber, said: “The fact is
that CAA research shows that 40 per cent of international and 70 per cent of long haul passengers reach their final destination indirectly. “We would love Glasgow Airport to be a major hub airport but, failing
that, Heathrow is the best option for the majority of our members and the wider business community.”
