CASE STUDY: GMG CONTRACTORS


GMG IS GIVING YOUNG PEOPLE A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN


GMG Contractors is a multi-discipline contractor within the construction industry, providing services to the private, social housing and commercial sectors. GMG has been operating for more than 25 years. The company undertook an


assessment under the first- generation IIYP framework in July 2014 and was awarded IIYP accreditation. It undertook a second assessment in September 2015, becoming one of the first companies in Scotland to achieve the new IIYP Gold level accreditation. GMG remains one of only a


handful of organisations to have met the requirements of this Gold- level accreditation.


As part of this work, GMG


wanted to provide its young people with a clear, continuous development path; a route for young people to develop their careers and, at the same time, have its value recognised by others in the business. Trainee Roof Tiler Gary Harrigan


said of his employment with GMG Contractors: “Having left school at 16, I didn’t have a clear path or future ahead. At 22, GMG gave me the opportunity to embark on training. GMG has restored my confidence.” GMG also wanted to ensure that


its younger workforce was trained, competent and efficient within


their roles. Several of their young workers have already moved into management positions, and are keen to provide a platform for future young people to establish their careers within the industry and the company. Investors in Young People


provided the business with the opportunity to showcase how it has been committed to training and developing its young people, thus strengthening its position as an established employer of choice for young people within the industry. “Our organisation is an example


that young people want to work and that you can build your business


around them,” said Stephen McCluskey, Business Development at GMG. Working with IIYP specialist Hilary Crick, GMG developed a three-month probationary appraisal process with supporting training plans for all trades. This involved the identification


of core skills, knowledge and behaviour measurements, and a personal development plan for all their young people.


Hilary also helped GMG to put
