DEVELOPING THE WORKFORCE OF


Partnership approach is giving young people more opportunities for employment


lasgow Chamber of Commerce is working on a major programme to support the development of stronger links between employers,


education and young people. Glasgow Chamber’s Projects Team is


leading the Developing the Young Workforce group in the city, one of the first such groups to be created in Scotland. Te formation of industry-led regional


Developing the Young Workforce groups was a key recommendation of the Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce, chaired by Sir Ian Wood. Since the Glasgow group launched in


February 2015, it has been working in partnership with a number of stakeholders, including Investors in People, to encourage more employers in Glasgow to bring young people into their businesses and engage with the youth employment agenda in their local area. By working together, the Glasgow


Developing the Young Workforce group and Investors in Young People are able to further support the business needs of businesses in Glasgow through understanding how young people can positively impact their business objectives as well as strengthen the Glasgow economy through reducing youth unemployment. Glasgow Chamber is using the strength of


its membership base and its wider contacts to raise the profile of youth employment within the city. A significant portion of the nearly 50 organisations in Glasgow already having achieved the Investors in Young People (IIYP) accreditation are active Chamber members. Te Glasgow Developing the Young


Workforce Group aims to help with increasing the number of businesses in Glasgow working with Investors in Young People by an additional 30 by the end of March 2016. Te development of Investors in Young


People framework was another key recommendation of the Wood Commission on Developing the Young Workforce. Te IIYP framework supports organisations looking to recruit, retain and develop young


people, and offers recognition for those that are already doing so. Te framework has been created in


consultation with organisations, stakeholders and young people and focuses on three key elements of youth employment – atraction and recruitment, support and development, and retention. Investors in Young People is the country’s


only people management award of its kind, and focuses on employers’ recruitment and retention of young people. IIYP works closely with organisations from


across the private, public and third sectors to help them meet their business objectives by engaging and developing a talent pipeline for the future. Te framework provides advice, recommendations and best practice regarding the recruitment, employment and training of young workers. Improvements have been made and are


continuing to be made in the employment of young people, but youth unemployment in


Scotland is still too high. Te programme aims to help to make Scotland more successful by energising businesses that are undertaking advice and guidance or assessment against the IIYP framework. IIYP seeks to help organisations by


unlocking and unleashing the talent of young people within business. Young people will make your business


more sustainable by creating a new generation of skilled workers who bring in new skills, talents and mind-sets into an organisation. Te recruitment, development and


retention of young people also helps leaders already in place by developing them through their nurturing of young talent.
