Birmingham and Belfast City fl ights plus a return of its direct fl ights to Exeter. In September, Romanian airline Blue Air


announced it would begin fl ying from Glasgow Airport for the fi rst time this winter – starting with a new direct fl ight to the Romanian capital of Bucharest. T e airline is off ering the service twice a week – on T ursdays and Sundays – starting on 17 December 2015. Wizz Air is also off ering fl ights to Bucharest starting fl ying from 18 December. Earlier in the month Canadian airline Air


Transat confi rmed it would introduce direct fl ights to Montreal in summer 2016. It is to have its inaugural fl ight to Montreal


in May, a service launched in good time for the city’s famous Jazz Festival in June. Air Canada Rouge announced it would


launch a seasonal direct service to its Toronto hub, Toronto Pearson in June 2016. T e new service between the two cities will operate three times per week from 14 June to 25 September 2016. Also in September, Wizz Air launched its


fi rst direct fl ights to the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius and the Polish city of Lubin. Vilnius is the second biggest city of the Baltic States and is renowned for being home to one of the largest surviving medieval quarters in Europe. Wizz Air fi rst moved to Glasgow Airport in


March 2013 and the addition of these two new routes brought the total number of destinations it serves from Glasgow to eight. Virgin Atlantic launched its fi rst fl ight to Las


Vegas from Glasgow, which began operating on 10 September with a Boeing 747-400 fl ying between the two cities in September and October. In August, Icelandair announced it was


increasing its Glasgow-Reykjavik service to six times a week. T e announcement of the additional fl ights


beginning in March 2016 marked the airline’s 70th anniversary of fl ights to Scotland. Also in August, British Airways announced


a new route from Glasgow Airport to Salzburg. T e winter season service has its fi rst fl ight on 12 December. In July, easyJet announced that it was


extending its network with a new service from Glasgow Airport to Milan Malpensa Airport. T e new year round service was due to launch on 2 December. In June, Jet2.com announced that it would


be fl ying a twice-weekly service to Girona in Spain from May 2016 in a development that will give easier access to the Costa Brava for West of Scotland holidaymakers. T at same month, Ryanair fl ew its inaugural


fl ight to Chania in Crete, with the weekly service on Wednesdays extending the holiday choice for Glasgow travellers.


4 In May, Luſt hansa’s inaugural fl ight to


Munich took off , giving Scot ish travellers bet er access to Bavaria. In the same month, T omas Cook Airlines


fl ew its fi rst fl ight to Las Vegas, T omson Holidays launched its fl ight to Dubrovnik and Jet2 fl ew its fi rst fl ight to Malta. Also in May, Jet2 fl ew its fi rst fl ight to


Larnica on the island of Cyprus and a new Ryanair service took off for the fi rst time to the historic town of Carcassonne in the south of France. In April, Icelandair announced an additional


1,400 seats to Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavik starting in September. Also that month, Wizz Air announced the


launch of two new direct routes: to the Hungarian capital of Budapest and the Polish city of Lubin. Of course domestic routes are also key for


the airport’s success, with Flybe launching a double daily service to Bournemouth in March and extra fl ights to Sumburgh in Orkney on Tuesdays and T ursdays and to Cardiff from the summer. Citywing has operated more fl ights between Glasgow and the Isle of Man from 1 May.


5 In January, Ryanair announced that it would


introduce direct fl ights to Berlin and a fourth daily service to London Stansted from the winter. Glasgow Airport has also invested in


developing its infrastructure, with a £20 million investment programme in 2014 which saw the main terminal building undergo a major overhaul. In the second half of 2015 the airport also


completed a £3.3 million extension to its East Pier, one of its three piers, in order to accommodate the new airlines and services and started work on a multi-million pound upgrade to retail and food and beverage outlets. Glasgow Airport also passed another


milestone recently with its FlightPath Fund having given £1 million to charities. Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive of Glasgow


Chamber of Commerce, said: “When you pause and look at all the new routes and the increase in passengers as a result, it really has been a phenomenal year of achievement at ained by Glasgow Airport. “T at success has resulted in an even bigger


contribution to the economy of Glasgow and Scotland as a whole.”
