No more slaves to the machine – make wellbeing a priority

I

» Gilly McMorran, Managing Director of our latest Training Partner Priority Management, highlights a pressing issue for all of us… technology now. We need quick

magine an ordinary day at work. You probably start in the morning with a cup of coff ee, greet your colleagues

and then the inevitable happens – you log on and are taken

straight into your inbox.

For many of

us, this simple action has become

automatic

behaviour and we don’t even realise

that this small action

then dominates the rest of the working day.

But we don’t do it just once a

week, it’s every day, every week. Email constantly asks for at ention and intrudes into our working schedule. Very few of us have the

discipline to structure the day in such a way that there are planned times to deal with email. T e answering of email is rarely part of our job description, but more an underlying assumption of functioning in today’s organisational life. Clearing inboxes does not constitute an honest day’s work, but sometimes that’s how we feel. We cannot

operate without QUICK TIP

Take control at the beginning of the day and make sure that when you log into your email fi rst thing in the morning, you are taken into

your calendar telling you what you are meant to be doing today, rather than your inbox, which tells you what everyone else wants you to do today.

access to information: it can have motivational potential for dealing with work, but when there is too much information, this can be a stressful experience and leave you feeling out of control. T e combination of feeling out of control and

experiencing a higher workload because of the large amounts of

information one has to deal with can be detrimental for health and

performance. Today, many have pcs, iPads or smartphones that organisations

have provided to raise the fl exibility of employees and to increase productivity and communication effi ciency. Research has indeed indicated that mobile tools can lead to increased productivity. Other advances are improved responsiveness, real-time information, faster decision making and more fl exibility in work schedules. T is fl exibility gives

individuals the opportunity to realise a

bet er work-life balance. However, why are we moving

away from the words ‘life-work balance’ and seeing ‘wellbeing’ as a ‘company value’ instead? Why is ‘wellbeing’ rising up most organisation’s agendas? T e two things might imply the same, but they are diff erent. For most of us, the lines

between home and work have

become unclear and few of us have really managed to achieve a good life-work balance. Instead, it seems individuals are struggling even more. T e company’s increasing expectations regarding availability suggest that employees feel compelled to immediately respond to work-related messages even during leisure time. Many of us feel greater

pressure to respond whether or not we want to. Many of us have become slaves to the machine. So, on one hand, organisations could be seen to be making more demands on their staff , but on the other, they recognise they need to support their staff to ensure they are healthy and stress free, therefore capable of doing a good job at all times – thus ‘wellbeing’. T ere’s a Catch 22 situation! Priority Management’s

Working Sm@rt programme teaches you how to take control of this, structure and plan your days and weeks more eff ectively, and maximise your technologies to ensure they work for you rather than the other way round.
