EXPORTING DISCOVER THE BENEFITS OF

S


cotish exports are booming. Te last statistics released at the beginning of the year


showed record exports of goods and services totaling £27.9 billion – a 7.2 per cent increase on the previous year. North America accounted for


the largest market at £3.9bn, followed by the Netherlands (£2bn), Germany (£1.9bn) and France (£1.8bn). While these export figures give


cause for confidence in the strengthening of the Scotish economy, a breakdown of the statistics showed that the exporting landscape is far from uniform; around 50 companies account for around 50 per cent of the total export value. Most of these are very large businesses; only 16 per cent of exports come from small companies employing less than 50 people. Te Scotish government has


ambitious plans for growing overseas trade and aims to increase the value of the country’s


exports by 50 percent by 2017. Te results are encouraging so


far with the latest export figures for 2013 (which exclude oil and gas exports) reaching £27.9bn, a 20 per cent increase on 2010’s export value. But growth is dependent on


encouraging more companies to explore their export potential and those currently exporting to seek new markets to expand sales. A 2014 survey by the Scotish


Chambers of Commerce identified a number of barriers that affected companies’ ability to increase sales. Regulation, difference in standards, tariffs and enforcement of legal rights and protections were the main barriers, followed by access to funding and to distributors/agents. Te Scotish government,


through Scotish Development International – part of Scotish Enterprise – has been supporting companies to explore overseas markets for many years. Domestically, SDI has a remit


to help businesses to develop their export knowledge and skills and it
