REDUCING YOUR BUSINESS RISK THROUGH ONLINE MARKETPLACES

If you are a company with products to sell, then you can’t afford to ignore online marketplaces. They are invariably your quickest and most effective route to growth and profit

B

usiness owners sometimes view ecommerce (selling online) as a risky

business. Geting a good-quality trading website, finding an experienced ecommerce manager to run it and working out how best to market and grow the business can be an expensive venture. Marketplaces are a great way to

test the market viability of your products first. From whisky to coffee beans or from power tools to perfume, selling on marketplaces can be a great place to start by testing the feasibility of whether people want to buy from you. If the products you want to sell

are not viable on marketplaces, then it can highlight areas that need to be reviewed and

improved on to help get products that users want to buy. Whether you sell Business To

Business wholesale (B2B) or Business to Consumer retail (B2C), buyers of all types make use of sites such as eBay, Amazon, Etsy, Alibaba or a host of other specialist marketplaces. With almost one third of

Scotish trade now claimed by the Scotish Government to be carried out as ecommerce [1] it’s not surprising that online marketplaces have become a major part of any business sales strategy [2]. One other key factor is for

those interested in exporting and international trade. All the major

marketplaces are international and local companies from Toolstop [3] and Trespass [4] through to Wholesale Domestic [5] and a host of small start-ups all use marketplaces as a key part of their sales strategy. As with most things in life,

there are hard and easy ways of doing things. Individually uploading product details, photographs and seting pricing can take a lot of time – especially when you sell items on multiple marketplaces. Tis is particularly true if you

want to sell internationally, where you probably need different product names, descriptions and prices. Tankfully, there is a much easier way.

It’s now possible to manage

dozens of different marketplaces using the same content management system that’s used to operate your main ecommerce website [6]. Even without your own

trading website, these systems can provide low-cost ways to manage sales to dozens of countries with different currencies as well as differential delivery times and stock availability. Get in touch for more help

and advice. REFERENCES
