A Truly Grand Hotel
The Providence Biltmore, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, is an iconic landmark hotel with a storied past in downtown Providence,RI.
Having opened in 1922 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the hotel got its start as part of Bowman- Biltmore Hotels Corporation and original- ly opened with 600 guest rooms.
The hotel had sister properties in Arizona, Coral Gables, Los Angeles (today The Millennium), New York (Trump’s Grand Hyatt), and numerous other locations. They all were designed and built in the “grand hotel”concept.
When the Great Depression hit the coun- try, however, many of these hotels went out of business. Those that remainedwere sold off, and these surviving properties have changed brands over the
years. This is true of the Providence Biltmore,as well.
An interesting twist in its history - contrary to what many hotels have done over the years in adding rooms to its total, the Providence Biltmore actually combined many of its rooms to increase their size. Today the hotel has 294 rooms and suites.
Lynda Masnyk, business transient sales manager for Providence Biltmore, noted that the hotel offers various room types. “Standard rooms are the smallest, and there are only 89 of those plus 13 deluxe rooms (standard room size, but located on a corner of the hotel, adding extrawin- dows). All of our remaining rooms are

suites, which means that more than 65 percent of our room inventory are suite- sized rooms.”
“We have 20 Premier King rooms that are dedicated to extended stay guests,” she added, “with a kitchenette that includes a mini fridge, microwave, cook-top, pots and pans, plates, silverware, and more. These rooms have one king bed, a living area and bedroom with TVs in each. Our Junior Suites are about 625-square feet with two king beds and huge closets. The Biltmore Suite is 700-square feet - we have 46 of them, which feature great views and a dining table in the room.We have six additional larger suites that include a Presidential, Noble, and three Grand or luxury suites.”
Regardless of room size, all boast compli- mentary wireless Internet access and have mini- refrigerators.
The hotel is nearing the end of a com- plete renovation that began in May of
2014.All guest rooms have been redone, as has the lobby and hotel restaurant.
The Providence Biltmore is one of the first Curio Collection hotels by Hilton.“All of the hotels in the Curio Collection are a bit different, and each has a story to tell,” noted Masnyk. “Our hotel is right in the heart of downtown Providence... two blocks from the train station… a bus sta- tion with Peter Pan service that goes to Logan, and local buses are close by, too. In addition, we have our own SUV that operates Monday to Saturday from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm that is free to our guests for travel within three-miles of the hotel.”
The restaurant was recently refurbished, as was the hotel lobby, which serves as a stunning entrance to the hotel. It boasts an elegant chandelier to go along with new carpeting, furniture, and a past-meets- present-meets-future ambience and vibe.
The lobby has several nooks and lounging areas. Registration can take place here, while meeting space can be found on the second,17th and 18th floors.
The Providence Biltmore has 14 meeting rooms in all totaling 19,000-square feet, most of which has been recently renovat- ed. The second floor is home to breakout spaces and the Garden Ballroom(almost 3,500-square feet),which is surrounded by an atrium balcony. All meeting space in the hotel features natural light with win- dows in every room.
Floor 17 offers the Grand Ballroom with over 4,200 square
feet. This elegant space has an adjacent l’apogee/reception area (840-square feet) and additional breakout space, plus fantastic views of downtown Providence. Floor 18 also offers amazing views and evenmore breakout space, plus another, larger reception area.
An outdoor terrace typically is open all season for guests, but it is closed tem- porarily during renovation and construc- tion. It can host events,ceremonies,recep- tions, or just serve as a place for guests to enjoy views of downtown. Able to hold 150 for a reception or 100 for a banquet, because of the way the building is con- structed, the terrace always remains shad- ed and doesn’t get too hot in summer.
